today hes in the drivers seat as a rookie on the nas car north circuit hes a fulltime rac er taking his 1985 buick regal to ab out 25 races in the united states and another five in canada i liked the com petition at the track he recalls of his days as a spec tator and so far the goodwoodarea driver has en joy ed a competitive track career he ranks among the top nas car newcomers following a success ful season last year racing a latemodel camaro at sunset north of bradford peter began his career on the stack er amateur circuit at the sunset track and was named top rookie there as he was the following year in the camaro he moved up to nascar in hopes attracting a spon sorship thatll en able him to pursue his ultimate goal of competing in the prestigious grand nationals there hed be up against many of auto racings legen dary drivers pe ters anxious to reach this level within four years but his next step is likely the late- model sportsmen class at us super speedways the 23yearold driver has the full support of his pa rents and of his manager ed hakonson of whitchurch- stouffville peter definitely has the ability to be- come a grand national driver says hakonson sit ting in on a recent interview in order to accomplish that hell need a major sponsor next year and were actively seeking one and while the rac ers mother admits she was naturally apprehensive about her sons career de cision she now says hes chosen this and ill back him up expensive sport hakonson stres ses that competitive racing at any level requires a huge financial outlay it takes a mini mum of 1000 a week to go racing according to the manager who notes that this money is in addition to the sub stantial amount re quired for a car tow trailer and other accessories hakonson in volved in the busi ness with a com pany that designs race clothing de scribes the good wood driver as a real athlete who doesnt smoke or drink this clean image is quite a departure from the wellworn racing streotype of life in the racing fast lane he says peter has re ceived assistance in the early stages of his career from veteran driver junior hanley who he regards as a friend john rossit- ter of dicksons hill is also credited for his engine work the driver is aided by a three- man pit crew mike grove and mike marcelli both of stouffville and torontos howie wareham which a wellstocked trophy case is evidence of peter gibbons successful threeyear auto racing career after receiving top rookie honors in both stocker and latemodel classes the 23- yearold goodwoodarea resident is speeding around nas car north tracks in places in the united states and canada his manager ed hakonson describes that circuit as the grey cup of the sport while calling grand national the super bowl peter wants to enter the big
