whitchurch- stouffville have been advised not to use water from their shallow wells an additional 28 wells containing water from a middle aquifer are ques tionable an official of the environment ministry told a committee meeting of council friday theres no immediate solution to the problem the meeting was told road salt is the main con taminant of the shallow wells however effluent from septic tanks and lawn fertilizers are also contribu tors road salt has seeped into the middle aquifer as well officials said a lower level water source is so far problem free to replace the 74 wells in the study area will cost an estimated 670000 to pipe water from the stouffvilld artesian system north of the bloomington road to ballantrae will cost in ex cess of 1 million no estimate was given on a communal water service theres no money avail able in the ministrys budget to cover the expense in 1985 the town was told the application deadline for work to be done in 1986 is oct 1 division of costs is expected to be 85 per cent assumed by the province and 15 per cent by the home owner both mayor tom wood and ward 2 councillor ron robb displayed frustration at the time lag between identifying the problem and correcting it we can only hold these people off so long pro tested councillor robb lit tle wonder he said citizens show distrust in govern ment mayor wood argued resi dents should face no ex pense since putting salt on the roads wasnt their re sponsibility dr john hodgkinson associate medical officer of health said many of the shallow wells are in a poor state of repair he noted too that ingredients other than salt were polluting the water dr hodgkinson warned against bandaid corrective measures only to encounter additional problems a few years down the road with respect to a public meeting mayor wood re commended discussion be postponed until test drills are complete a mid- september date was consi dered dcsireable ministry officials advised that if possible an indepen- dent well program be approved in the meantime those whose wells have been condemned should con tinue using bottled water it was agreed councillor fran sains- bury wondered about future development in the ballan trae area and asked whether specific standards with respect to well depths should be spelled out in sub division agreements dr hodgkinson said close to fifty letters had been sent out from his office to resi dents in the ballantrae com munity out of this number no more than fifty replies had been received mayor wood said most en quiries had come to the town cam fella on
