and take up breeding in a serious way steve houston stouffville man loves his spiders and snakes by steve houston unlike musician jim stafford who sang out against them stouffvilles stan mazur loves spiders and snakes in fact he loves them so much he raises snakes lizards and alli gators on his stouffville farm and estimates that his pets total about 100 its more a way of life than a hobby explained 34yearold mazur in a room decorated with mounted snake and lizard skins when you get this involved it controls your life to a certain ex tent mr mazur confessed that he has been an avid collector since he was a youth roaming the ravines in toronto looking back he says he has come a long way from catching frogs and garter snakes today he tends betty the burmese python frankie the african rock python and 12yearold bruce the cayman alligator amongothers so when mr mazur iswt im porting tropical fish for a toronto wholesaler hes either thinking about his collection working on improving it or dreaming about a display he recently finished a move for his animals to stouffville and pointed out that things are smoo thing out now with a workable amount of animals the collection is sort of stabi lizing now he said with any thing more than 100 animals it gets a little harder to take care of them with connections he has made in the past while in teachers col lege in toronto mr mazur has done many presentations to elementary school children for torontos separate school board he said it is an educational treat for the children many of whom never get outside the city for many of these children in the city its a treat because they get to handle an animal theyve never seen or touched before he said he adds that his favorite friend bruce the cayman alligator usually accompanies him on the presentations he pointed out that bruce is a shoein for win ning the childrens hearts the kids love him hes really goodnatured mr mazur said hes been handled since he was little so that has helped too feeding lizards rattlesnakes and pythons that total 100 is a task in itself but mr mazur pointed out that because the animals are coldblooded they get heat from external sources and dont re quire daily feedings thats the nice thing about reptiles once you have them in a stable environment care is minimal he noted they are lowkey animals and dont re quire a lot of entertainment they amuse themselves he admits that tempers have flared in the past and said he once had a brush with an exotic habu pit viper that resulted in emergency surgery on his hand and arm to remove the deadly venom my life was never endangered though he said if your taking the responsibility you must take the precautions that is why antivenom kits are never too far away from the cages in which the snakes and lizards are kept in the future mr mazur hopes to have a permanent display and home for the animals in toronto he said that with a permanent display he can indulge in some serious breeding and trading to expand the collection i hope for something thats educationally oriented rather than with a freak show atmos phere he noted 2 piece plain suite rebuilt and recovered only iqo00
