besa bismaro looks on the new machine was at the fordphilco plant in markham last week so that employees could see the finished product many of its electronic components are made in markham selling insurance women arent interested by don atanasoff news editor after 11 years operating as an indepen dent keith liedtke has sold markham travel ltd to marlin travel mr liedtke who founded markham travel in november of 1974 said he made the decision to sell because of the great package deal marlin put together lets say they made me an offer i couldnt refuse said mr liedtke explain ing it involved cash shares a bonus incen tive plan and a position managing the mar kham office they have been after me to sell for about three years mr liedkte continued it was a great offer and its a good company to work for with a good head office and a chance for advancement mr liedtke began his operation in a small office in the village shoppes but four years later his agency had grown quickly needing more space markham travel moved to the family trust building at hwys 48 and 7 where it continued to grow for the next four years with the building of the markville shopping centre mr liedtke saw the opportunity to expand his business even further and managed to obtain a lease despite bids from other larger travel agen cies for the space when mr liedtke first moved into mark ville marlin was not present in the ontario market formed in edmonton in 1967 and owned by the marlin family the company grew slowly at first by 1976 it had only four offices in edmonton and calgary however in 1976 rod marlin and busi ness associate gary elliott purchased the company from the family and proceeded to expand rapidly six years later marlin had 41 offices and was the largest travel agency in western canada mr liedtke wants to reassure all of mar kham travel centres customers that no thing has changed at the office except the name in fact mr liedtke said the service would even be better because of the respect an organization the size of marlin comman ds marlin has an enormous amount of clout said mr liedtke whether it be in bargaining for reduced rates or if some thing should happen to go wrong from a corporate client end the bulk buying can result in reduced hotel and car rental rates all of this is very difficult for an indepen dent to do mr liedtke added compet ing against agency chains is like the small corner drugstore competing against shop pers drug mart mr liedtke expressed some sadness at leaving the realm of the independent businessmen but that was tempered with his optimism for what lies ahead he was very pleased that the office staff would re- main the same and they they would have ample opportunity to improve themselves- by steve houston staff reporter mutual lifes john near needs women he needs women with drive energy and a willingness to make up to 60000 per year mr near branch manager of mutual life of canada in willowdale is looking for women to work as insurance brokers and financial counsellors hes concerned about the absenceof women among his branchs 13man sales staff j its smart business sense to hire women theres no reason why they cant be as successful as men- said mr near adding that hiring more is not an attempt to relieve a guilty conscience women dont want to be patronized they want to be hired because they have abilities the opportunity is there its just undiscovered as well as life insurance mutual life offers its clients a wide range of financial services mr near said the com pany has retirement savings plans group life health and disability insurance estate planning pensions and finan cial blueprints people tend to think of just the life insurance he said there is a much broader range of services we deal in little pieces of everything now the problem in recruiting he said is that many women are afraid to leave the security of traditional jobs with weekly salaries he pointed out the extensive training course the company provides with a guaranteed income of 1500 to 2000 per month over a period of two years for successful candidates and because it is segmented and flexible trainees can sample the job before leaving the one they already have working on commission might frighten a person who is used to a salary in a traditional career he said that risk is virtually taken away for those first two years he noted that the company depends on the investment made on a candidate and expects them to produce as they become more familiar and proficient on the job he noted that some of the most potentially successful candidates are older women sometimes divorced and rais ing children these women already have a great deal of responsibil ity they are winners simply because they survived he noted v he added that studies prove that women are not as easily distracted as men can concentrate better on specific tasks and are more highly motivated in general right now we are especially interested in women in respect to where we are and where we should be he said the strongest candidates we are considering right now are women he added if a woman thinks of just life insurance shes not think ing of what we offer with the word out that women should consider financial counselling as a career and with a promising annual salary that mr near says averages about 49000 does he see a growing interest in the future id be very safe in saying we will see an increase in women on the job in the next year and for the next number of years he said keith liedtke has sold markham travel but will remain as manager under new owners marlin travel the change in ownership could mean the firm will offer an even wider range of travel services i sjoerd witteveen home of the week country location on 10acre
