seventeenyearold tasneem doctor of emeline crescent markham has maintained honor standing through three years at stouffville high born in bom bay india she came to canada with her parents when only five months old shes a member of the school choir booster club and cheerleading team jim thomas girl next door honor student by jim thomas markham seventeen- yearold tasneem doctor is a resident of markham emeline crescent and attending stouffville dist secondary school but she doesnt feel out of place in fact she likes it so much at sdss she plans to com plete her grade 13 there its smaller she says you know everybody and everybody knows you youre not just a number tasneems our girl next door initially from bombay in dia tasneem moved with her parents to canada when she was very young for a time they lived in toronto taking up residence in mar kham 3 vz years ago she has a younger sister shaheen 14 a student in grade 9 tasneem is involved in many activities at stouffvil le high shes a cheerleader a member of the booster club and a member of the choir she played alto sax in the sdss band from grade 9 through grade 11 soccers a favorite sport an honor student for the past three years tasneem selects math as a favorite subject following gradua tion she plans to go on to uni versity although she hasnt settled on a definite profes sion dentistry is presently at the top of her list tasneem has enjoyed many long distance trips in cluding bombay india europe and parts of the un ited states a family vaca tion to the us is planned for this summer i air bands popular by chris garbutt people are moving their mouths but arent saying anything no this doesnt mean theres a communication problem at sdss it means that once again its air band time this historical annual event took place friday attendance was very impressive air band competition involves the up- synching of the words and playing of the air guitar and other instruments of a pretaped song contestants are required to do their best to imitate the group they have chosen to mimic is that clear many of fridays finalists could easily have been mistaken for the real thing nearly thirty groups were entered origi nally however the field was narrowed to nine for the finals the music ranged from the 50s style as flash cadillac performed at the hop to the country and western sound of ala bama from the punk of the ramones rock and roll high school to the heavy metal headbanger noise of ratt and wasp i want to be somebody the other groups were autograph with turn up the radio shane rutherford and his group performing i can dream about you madonna and lucky star and van halen with panama the audience was enthusiastic to say the least and definitely pleased with what they saw and heard the clear winner by unanimous deci sion was van halen winning air musicians werebill hughes on lead air vocals martin wells on lead air guitar ed roberts on lead bass air guitar and mark belisle on air drums van halen appears to have a special place in the hearts of sdss this is the second year in a row this group has been king of the air bands one last but very important note this is student council election week make your choices wisely fine art recognized stouffville the work of john roberts art teacher on the staff of stouff ville dist secondary school has been rec ognized by a leading art magazine in the united states north light has given over two of its pages to a writeup on mr roberts com plete with a display of photos the roberts unique style described as ribbonesque seeks new ways to describe solid forms with contour lines that expand in a swirl of flowing ribbons says mr roberts of himself although my art gallery dealer was in a state of shock after seeing these paintings so un like my previous work he went ahead and submitted them to the jury of the ontario society of artists for their annual exhibi tion eight hundred entries from across canada were submitted and my con versation was accepted i was on cloud nine and still am mr roberts near the end of his 14th year at sdss is justly proud of his students accomplishments the majority of his eight coop students have already been accepted at art colleges in the toronto area in particular mr roberts is pleased with the work of student ron letkeman winner of a prize in art in 1984 following gradua tion ron plans to go on to
