branch was started in york region last year dr bill murphy of stouffville is a regional coordinator and one of sixteen volunteers he spoke at a meeting of can- cer society captains and canvassers in stouffville united church may 8 cansurmount is a onetoone visitation program between volunteers whose lives have been touched by cancer and patients currently fighting the disease the position of having been there pre pares themto share the patients deep feel ings that even the most understanding friends and family may be unable to realize dr murphy describes it as an emotion al support program the speaker is one whos been there his medical problem four years ago was diagnosed as cancer however at that time there was no organization like can surmount in the area it all happened so fast the diagnosis and the surgery i didnt have much time to think about it he said feelings of deep depression occurred later he explained he said his wife proved tremendous sup port dr murphy recalled wondering if each important event an anniversary a birth day and christmas would be his last he said other concerns that previously seemed important suddenly became tri vial dr murphy said 50 percent of those per sons in attendance at wednesdays meet ing would be effected either directly or indirectly by cancer cansurmount he said is a visitation program that can occur in a hospital or in
