surprise faces behind the names that appear weekly in the sports pages of the tribune are familiar to stouffville hockey fans but to other readers they are unknown here is a chance to see them introducing the successful fame inter- editors mail soccer president replies to elitism dear sir regarding casey van maris letter charging the whitchurch- stouffville soccer club with elitist practices favouring competitive soccer to the detriment of the house league i am disappointed that mr van maris did not spend some time getting all the facts before rushing into print with a totally distorted view of what we are trying to achieve within bur club we asaclub are ex tremely concerned ab out house league play ers hence the reason for deciding to amalgamate with our friends in ux bridge on a one year trial basis only our other option was to enter them in the york region recreational league which is plagued with problems and might not even operate this com ing season many clubs who participated in their program last year be came disenchanted we want to provide these young people with the best possible en- i vironmment in which to participate the facili ties at stjohns school being second to mr van maris men tioned the travelling in volved but failed to point out that the york recreational house league players would be travelling to places such as aurora east gwil- limbury also bradford which is at least 40 kms from stouffville v another fact over looked by mr van maris is that 88 house league mites will be playing minisoccer all season at the mcneil fields he also fails to mention that of the other ten or more teams depending on en rolment playing out of stouffville only two the panthers and castle royals will be a com petitive teams that makes a minimum of 160 players out of a total of 248 i would also like to point out that a great deal of time and effort was spent last winter and indeed this winter in developing our play ers in an indoor program that ranged from squirt to bantam in which soc cer skills are taught to all who wish to partici pate regardless of ability mr van maris is wel come to visit my mon day night session at the ballantrae school where he willfind there is not one competitive player in attendance these boys all played in house league last year at either squirt or minor atom level should he prefer he can have the choice of a visiting baliantrae or summitview schools ev ery thursday evening where he can see house league and competitive plaayers hone their skill under the capable direc tion of roy houston arid brian bishop on the weekends we get together at stouffvil le secondary school in a friendly indoor game to try and put the skills learned into a game situation i would be the last to deny that royals and panthers are there in liberal numbers but they are mixed with house leagueplayers it is interesting to note that during mr van maris tenure as presi dent of the wssc the fol lowing was passed in the minutes 198046 and i quote that as of janu ary all gyms are to be used for a team try- outs could it be that mr van maris was the instigator of the elitist theory furthermore i am pleased to inform him that this policy has been rescinded by the present executive all gyms are now used for player- development re- gardless of skills it might also be of in terest to know that the fee for an outdoor season of house league soccer has been reduced from 35 to 22 by the time this letter is printed four stouffvil le soccer teams will have competed in the peterborough indoor tournament the teams are made up as follows the atoms consist of 100 percent house league players while the mos- quitoe team field 80 per cent house as to whether they won or lost is unimportant but one thing is sure we played the game i would sir ask that you would do the same sincerely tom morton president wssc decision unfair dear editor regarding casey- van maris letter i agree with what he said after three seasons of support ing the club a child play ing recreational soccer is now being singled out its terrible to think that a child is denied the right to play recreational soc cer instead of competi tive in his or her own town sincerely ann mckonzie stouffville national atom squad back row 1 to r tim lavell david spoorenberg team captain brandon pridham nathan brown and jay scaif front row i to r game the team has had an in different season and were not expected to get past the first round of the playoffs however as coach steve malcolm said if they keep playing like that he obviously is as surprised as everyone else at the teams sudden turnaround friday night saw picker ing open the scoring but geoff smith put in a fine solo effort to equalize just a mi nute later picking up the puck from behind his own blue line smith skated it all alone up the- ice to blast it past the pickering net- minder there was plenty of action in the second period but neither team could get the puck in the net the clippers went ahead in the third on a twoonone assault by phil pridham and ryan jefferson the pass coming from jason reesor it was pridham who found the range pickering tied it up within seconds leaving the- clip pers to keep on digging until lindsay haylow forced the pickering defence to cough up the puck from behind their own net pridham as usual was in the right spot to tuck it in but just wasnt fast enough on this oc casion his rebound getting picked up by geoff smith who made absolutely no mistake in banging it in at uxbridge the tension did not run as high but the clippers continued to play like winners coming away with a satisfying 41 win over their neighbors ryan jefferson started the clipper scoring effort by digging out the puck from behind the uxbridge net giving pridham his first of two goals the clippers remained ahead in the second period making it 20 on a beautiful shot from the blue line by smith who found the top corner of the net david mountjoy foiled the ux bridge attempt late in the period to clear the puck from their own end passing it to colter carconi who made it 30 the assist went to chad dickinson although ryan jeffer sons fast breakaway failed to produce a goal phil pridham was again in the right place to pop in the re bound sunday morning was a special occasion for kent smythe left captain of the edwardsmurphy bantam hockey team he
