the universi ty of waterloo has already obtained her private pilots licence a lot of what im studying relates to flying she says noting that shed like to eventually combine her chosen subject and her aerial hobby in a career sonya the daughter of norman and carol meek sandford is the recipient of the 1984 ontario county womens institute scholarship for 4h homemaking club members a 200 cash award is going toward the cost of her university education sonya completed 12 4h units over a six- year period while earning county and pro vincial honors she also held offices of pres ident secretary and treasurer and was an assistant leader the sandford youth group was another area of involvement and she also taught sunday school for four years despite her busy schedule sonya found time to help around the family farm lo cated on cone 4 south of sandford sonyas a graduate of uxbridge secon dary school where she was an ontario scholar and won the geography award in her final year involvement with the year book includ ing 198283 when she served as editor was an enjoyable high school experience sonya whose just about to turn 20 gained some valuable work experience this past summer while employed by the south lake simcoe conservation author ity newmarket as a summer student involved with the lake simcoe environmental management study sonya helped conduct a streambank erosion study she wrote a report documenting the find ings performed an agricultural field ero sion identification study and updated com- puter files concerning water quality and quantity it was a fun job and i really learned a lot she says one of the reasons sonya chose geogra phy was the wide variety of subject matter that exists within the field she says her interest slants more toward the environmental and physical aspects of geography her father norman is a pilot and it was with him that sonya got her first taste of flying i love looking at the world from above course offered pickering a sixweek course on selfdefence will be offered at the picker ing recreation complex the classes geared toward female parti cipants will be held wednesdays from 1 to 3 pm theyll begin nov 14 and continue until dec 19
