mmmmmm mmmmvmm a6 economist suntribune october 3 1984 in unionvilles steven lewis who took top honors in the heavy horse show at markham fair grooms one of his award winning clydesdales 7 heavy horses are impressive hailing from breeding stock that stems back to central and western europe the draft or heavy horse has come a i iongway since its traditional function as a beast of burden s these breedsthe clydesdale the percheronthe belgian and the commercial have now become popular showing stock ijjjwmwm i some of ontarios finest heavy horses competed last week at the markham fair drawing large crowds who- braved belownormal september weather vtheoverall champion exhibitors were in the percheron class reg black of moorcfield ontario in the belgian category doug palmer of schomberg in the clydesdale division the gordon lewis family of union ville and ux- bridge and in the commercial category there was a tie between mrs ruby cochrane of blackstock and jim mckay of- dobbihton jjyudges tony castagnaso and dan cieyts both from michigan said the horses were judged on how they moved their conformation and size and appearance by juliette moss student reporter joyce lapp virtually outbaked alii comers at this years markham fair her culinary creations succeeded in netting her six firsts as well as six seconds her butterscotch pie with top ping and a chiffon cake also earned her the grand champion ribbons for the refigerated and cake sections she has entered the fair consistently for the last 10 years so results like this have come with the effort of time arid practice r mrs lapps talents also continue into the garden she garnered two firsts arid a second forher flowering plants myrtle hamils flowers also had a verysuccessful year she won three catagories in the divisioris for snap but- terflies snaps and petunias in honor of ontarios bicentenial a new division was added this year to some of the gerieral exhibit classes exhibitors were required to create something that represented life as it was 200years ago this special category brought rob saley a third for his talented art work he also claimed a first four seconds and another third in the intermediate category- rob has had an interesting history of competition at the fair as a junior he created a minor controversy by enter ing and winning both the junior and v intermediate divisions one of the most consistent entrants into the crafts category at thef air are the residents of union villa this year onebf the special pieces of needlepoint will go to the markham fairs annual meeting a crossstich picture frame by margaret collins won a first and a spe cial recognition ribbon union villa scored three other firsts four seconds three thirds and two f orths two of the firsts were created by muriel lehman for hercrbssstich pil low and stiiffedtoy the final first was won by mrs mclebd for her afghan the student craft classes are often the rnbst coriipetitiye tin the general exa bibits buildihg while they fell behind withchurchhighlarids public school for best all around school roy h cros by students produced four firsts one of which wasj accomplished by marilync gordons grade 3 and 4 class who pro duced the best selfsupporting scareerowof this years fair the scarecrow christened hermie by ttie27member class started frorii the7 childrens sketches and then progres sed aseach member of the class added finishing touches drawing construct ing arid the bet ter partof two days to complete said mrsgbrdxm the class was notified bf their win- ning scarecrow last wednesday morn- ingrmrs gordonchose a couple of kids to go and recieve the plaque the next day at lunchi what was really great was that a dozen of the other kids in the class showed up at that time also ive had classes enter this for the last few years i guess persistance pays off she said bryan arriistrong president of the 1984 markham fair prounounced the fair a success he noted that the weath er held up weir during the weekend making for the usuallarge crowds on saturday and sunday disaster very nearly struck on the tuesday night when high winds blew over one of the large tents the damage was repaired quickly on wednesday in time for the opening that evening it isnt hard to see- why this father and son duo won the chip off the old block contest at markham fair they are father bob maclaren and his son ian 12 of milliken wmm kim jones of markham hula hoops up a storm during the contest at markham fair on saturday photos by dawn anderson marc mascioni jim holt and chris shanahan ism
