top scorerterry ellis panthers scoop region divisional title again a niitlunexpectedly the panthers stouffvilles high ly successful soccer team won the region of york cup final against richmond hilljthe game was a closely fought contest that ended in a 32 win for the panthers but it wasnt an easy victory by any means strikers giles francis and jamie grist combined for the opening goal fran cis heavily marked got the ball to grist after a fine move by playmaker travis white opening up the green machines defence for grist to hammer in the ball the panther defence came under pressure from claremont in the first two meetings of the best-of- five final the clubs were to clash in greenbank monday night but heavy fog forced post ponement until tuesday result of that crucial con test was stouffville goalie shawn gilbert making some fine saves a clearance by gilbert saw john macvarish pick up the ball at midficld beat ing his man and passing to jamie sheridan who strip ped the magna defence be fore getting the ball to steve fockler fockler didnt need a second chance to hammer the ball past a helpless magna goalie fockler repeated the per formance minutes later to go ahead 20 at half time the second half was play ed mainly in the magna half with back liners jay hause neil puente jesse smith and david spoorenberg forcing any kind of magna attack to fizzle out midfielders chad saw the stouffville squad blank ed 40 by newmarket a team they had previously beaten during season play next week the team is en tered in newmarkets first annual senior tournament girls win at gbssa tourney sdss golfers take top title stouffville high schools athletic program got off to a good start last thursday the girls golf team cleaned up at the georgian bay championships held at the maples golf course ballan trae the team was one of five entered from markham bracebridge richmond hill and king city mar kham providing the tough est competition and finishing second stouffvilles win was their first ever the six girl team finished the course with a combined best low score of 383 for four players terry ellis turned in the best score of the day with an 84 with two other members also finishing in the top four terry received the indi vidual trophy for her fine effort coach chuck roche was delighted with the response from students 23 of whom tried out for the team the final selection was made af ter two elimination rounds students received special rates from course owner mike wade a gesture much appreciated by coach roche who intends to return again next year for hopefully a repeat performance members of the victorious team are kim mcconnell sherry walker corrie ellis linda belisle dawn ellis and terry ellis the girls are now prepared to take on allcomers before te season is over hopefully the boys might take up the challenge team honored with sports award stouffvilles junior girls soccer team sponsored by george ross photo gave a good account of themselves in the york region cham pionship finals at wood- bridge on saturday prior to the final the girls were awarded the team sportsmanship award from amongst an entry of 26 boys and girls junior and bantam teams in earning the award the girls re ceived an average of 1064 out of a possible 12 points for their quality of play atti tude towards opponents re ferees officials and overall team spirit during the 84 season the points are awarded throughout the season by the referees association the award was a first for a stouffville team with joint captains brigitte and sandra edwards traveling from montreal to be on hand for the presentation and cup final the stouffville squad went on to meet richmond hill in the championship fin al from the kickoff the for ward line of lisa zeck dorothy ireton patricia bender shannon cooney and heather johannessen pushed for an early decision with a series of shots on goal that resulted in a goal by ireton unfortunately it was called offside and rich mond hill replied with a sur efire goal just 20 seconds be fore halftime r a low shot past goaltender brigitte ed wards second half play saw stouffville slacken the pace with richmond hill quick to take advantage to go ahead 20 the defence line ofleesa baldwin keri wynn and lauri campitelli worked overtime to hold off the richmond hill attacks while baldwin took over goaltending duties to stop a penalty shot with only ten minutes left to play credit must go to midfiel- ders cora ryan julie burch sandra edwards mary ireton and kim burch for keeping the play in the opposition end in the second half however the clock ran out and richmond hill took a well deserved 20 win coaches bill burch and doug baldwin summed up the day as a great one for the team having finished at the bottom of the league standings then going on to defeat markham 32 in the semifinal and end up as runners up also winnning the annual sportsmanship award was a great way to finish the year team members are
