from the american contingent with a superb faultfree jumpoff round leaving the visitors to place 2nd 3rd and 4th it was a great performance by the young rider who last year suffered a setback when she took a bad tumble at the world cup qualifying competition in quebec the fact that carlsen was without her regular horse kahlua made it even tougher on the young rider however the switch to tan go a 9 yearold thorough bred gelding didnt affect her confidence tango had been jumping well all week so i knew we could do well although hes a pretty tough horse to ride she said in the individual dres sage for the claremont squirts chief hurler mike feasby broke his nonpitching arm just prior to the playdowns against fenelon falls a month back which kept him out of the first two games despite the setback to their oasa championship hopes the team snatched a first game victory over fenelon squeezing by with an 1814 win however with the absence of feasby the squirts dropped their second of their threegame scries 97 last week feasby was de clared fit and was back on the mound for the decisive third game the talented hurler proved that you cant keep a good man down he pitched 15 strikeouts to squad is at full strength he is confident that they will give a good account of them selves in my opinion by jim holt time will tell having reached beyond 40 i sometimes ruminate rather like a cow chewing the cud over the problems of growing old when i was young ah was it so long ago i suffered from the delusion that i was immortal dont all young men one minute you are 18 and the world is your oyster the next thing you know you are celebrat ing your 25 wedding anniversary the kids are adults and you my friend are very old yes its a thought isnt it you who were so ageless immortal and unbreak able at last father time is catching up with you you dont even have to go to a party to feel like the morning after your children begin to look middleaged and you begin to outlive enthusiasm its a sad thing this growing old friends disappear over night at my age im lucky if they last through dinner and you get your exercise acting as pallbearer for friends who exercised not wisely but too well when the kids are in their teens you try to keep up with them and if you are like me end up in hospital after all one musnt lose face your friends aghast at the onslaught and ravages of time fight valiantly against middleage spread and creaking joints their knees buckle but unfortunately their belts wont its all that natural sag they end up working themselves into a lather by playing innumerable bouts of tennis and jogging them selves into cardiac arrest i watch them speed past my house every morning shoulders drooping faces etched with fatigue arms and legs pumping in synchro nized agony can they really go to the office and carry out a full days work in that condition imagine all for the sake of being told my word you do look well not for me this erratic mayhem of keeping fit i drink more than is good for me smoke to excess flirt with every pretty girl i can lay my eyes on and to hell with the consequences over 40 is knowing all the answers when nobody asks you questions knowing that you are no longer competi tive especially when it comes to sports and realising that the best part of the day is over when the alarm goes off it is a sad but inevitable fact that we have to grow old the options are simple you can fight it or like me accept it and grow old gracefully looking around i am undoubtedly in the minority when am i not there seems to be no sense in wearing out what you have in the hope of elusive longevity mind you one cannot help but give grudging admiration to those who fight tooth and nail to offset the ageing pro cess but will they last any longer than i i doubt it wishful thinking the ramifications of eldreds possible departure are becoming plainer as election time draws near tony romans bid for a seat in the federal parliament could mean that our mayor might suddenly end up in the regional chair verbal jostling and nudging is already apparent nearly all members of council fancy themselves as eldreds successor wilf morley and jim sanders con sider themselves as legitimate contenders morley by virtue of the fact that he has played well the part of heir apparent to eldreds feifdom i dont think he has opposed eldred in a vote since the last election and sanders heaven forbid by his seniority tom go with the flow wood is incensed by the suns recent article that morley and sanders are logical re placements his comments to me at the recent sod- turning ceremony leave no doubt in my mind that he would like to sit in the hot seat however i think not tom changes his mind prior to the last but one election when he stood against becky wedley he swore that if elected he would give up all other political affiliations to do a good job for the town six months later he accepted the vicechairmanship of the local conserva tive party same applies to the arena complex having vowed to vote against it because the cost was too high he flipflopped leaving margot marshall with egg on her face i dont think margot will forget that one in a hurry fran sainsbury has aspirations to being the first mayoress of stouffville if only dreams were reality frans tunnel vision over the dump may have won her a seat against a perfectly sound and reliable incumbent bill kamps but she has proved herself less than adequ ate as a councillor in my book anyway i dont know of one single motion she has tabled since her election jim rae is without aspirations in this direction al ways pleasant and civil he seldom rocks the boat and is not really interested as far as i can see he just wants to stay where he is this leaves the diminutive brunhilde from cedar valley margot marshall her experience is limited but she doesnt lack enthusiasm her ongoing feud with eldred they fight like cat and dog must stand her in good stead perhaps shes learning the hard way she seems competent and bounding with enthusiasm we could do a lot worse personally i dont think eldred is going anywhere so everyone might just as well sit back and relax mind you i suspect the way hes going he could last another 50 yearsoh god
