packed hall for candidates meeting claremont the pickering airport lands were one of the interesting topics for- discussion among ontario riding candidates at a meeting here monday evening the federal election forum hosted by claremont united church attracted a capacity crowd of nearly 200 the three candidates progressive conservative incumbent scott fennell liberal gary herrema and new democrat geoff rison dealt with major issues like the economy acid rain and job creation but it was the local con cerns that sparked the most spirited debate mr fennell spoke en thusiastically in his open ing address of claremonts bright fu ture he said there was something good happen ing in claremont a spirit of renewal after past negative experiences with government property ex propriation he wants to keep the pickering lands green be cause he feels another air port isnt required we have to turn it back into productive land for young farmers mr fen nell told the crowd the liberal hopeful backed by many suppor ters from his home to wn of uxbridge criticized the tory mp for not doing anything in the riding particularity with the air port lands mr herrema said a public hearing should be held to decide future de velopment in this area the tory incumbent promised that a pc gov ernment would revive the claremont-to- peterborough via train which he jokingly said was originally canned by the liberals because it ran through three tory ridings mr rison touched on claremont concerns such as water and roads and said its those local issues where the present riding mp has let constiuents down when questioning turned to capital punish ment in light of two recent police killings mr fen nell said he would like a free vote on the subject in the house of commons he added that he perso nally supports the deter rent of capital punish ment in cases of first de gree murder mr herrema spoke strongly in favor of capital punishment while mr rison said he is against it when asked what theyd do of discipline when they return to uxbridge secon dary school uss next week the durham board of education has directed all schools under its jurisdic tion to produce a written code of behavior the
