a4 tribune june 27 1984 editors mail unsafe dear editor im writing with regard to an article in the tribunes june 20 edi tion wider the headiiig lighting poor id like someone to explain what has to be done to improve the light ing in the area of the parkette at rupert avenue and westla wn cres cent in fact the area of rupert ave nue and westlawn crescent in general i am a sixteenyearold girl and work in downtown stouf f ville often as late as 930 pm i must walk home and am terri fied- im not the only girl who must travel this route after dark often i see young men sitting in the park drinking beer one never knows what terrible things could happen it could cost someone their life sincerely a concerned teen name withheld upon request lopsided to the editor im in agreement with the busi ness improvement area board with regard to inadequate lighting on stouffvilles main street i can recall when the lighting was upgraded on the south side of main but the project was never com pleted while globe lights are attractive by installing them on the north side of main the downtown will again appear lopsided better i feel for the bia to consider a complete illumination program rather than doing it piecemeal sincerely fred perkins north street stouffville onuno community aoo james thomas editor the tribune established 1888 bruce annan publisher pat pappas advertising manager editorial felt by council particu larly member representatives in wards 1 and 2 while this attitude may change with receipt of wintario the resistance appears strong but what are the alternatives does our town not require something better than the thirtyfive year old barn that only poses as an are na and has long outlived its day does our town not require an indoor pool a fitness centre and squash courts or must we go on living off the avails of recreation facilities provided by ux- bridge markham aurora and new market weekend of activity this weekend weather permitting will be the towns busiest a program of events beginning with the miss whitchurchstouffville pageant thursday and concluding with a display of fireworks sunday should attract thousands of spectators to the high school latcham hall the pool and the park the museum and the library wherever activities are going scheduled the twofold canada day- bicentennial celebration under the chairmanship of councillor tom wood is planned solely for people if people fail to participate then the vork of the com mittee goes down the drain we feci events of this kind are good for the community it makes the town come alive we hope to see lots of life in whitch urchstouffville this weekend a lengthy program has been organized all thats needed now is support rather than continually criticize the proposed rec centre project the rate payers association should offer some thing in its place put up or shut up as the saying goes town council in our opinion has worked long and hard on this proposal so also has the coordination commit tee no ones to blame for delays a pro ject of this magnitude requires patience once the inflated bids are reduced to a level whitchurchstouffville can afford a contract willbe signed and construc tion wiltjbegin mayor eldred king is hopeful of a midseptember start we hope hes right id planned to play hooky from church sunday i had a good excuse rev bob flemming of sprjngvale baptist had cal led friday and while he didnt talk to me personally he left a note the occasion was a sodturning cere mony for a building project an impor tant event in the life of the springvale congregation he considered it worthy of my attendance and noted that the pre sence of my camera would also be appreciated the stipulated time was 1145 am such activities on a sunday morning are embarrassing i never know quite what to do two choices are available skip worship at my own church entirely or worse walk out in the middle of the ser mon either way people are sure to wonder if i dont show up theyll think im sick or slept in if i escape from the sanctuary in the middle of the message theyll think im angry with something the ministers said either way it prompts questions the lesser of two evils i find is not to attend at all then folks can think what they like that was my decision last sabbath not to attend at all but it wasnt to be at the moment of my departure after delivering my wife and family daugh ter susan came running to the curb where are you going she aslced tears welling up in her eyes to springvale baptist church i answered whats so important there she re sponded a sodturning i replied but you cant she sobbed youre needed here this is important too for the life of me i couldnt figure out what was going on but the look of plead ing on her face made aipre- j arranged sodturning suddenly seem tri vial i agreed to seek out the services of an substitute and return to my proper place in the pew and im glad i did for if i hadnt the bands of a pending divorce action would probably have been read from the pulpit yes the day was our day an occa sion the congregation had set aside to honor jean and myself on our 25th wed ding anniversary the best kept secret in stouffville the presentation of corsages by two lovely young ladies was only the starta reception followed complete vvith anniversary cake cards arid gifta sil ver serving dish i was dumbfounded jean was too the speakers said all kinds of nice things about jean and even found it in their hearts to say a couple of nice things about me generous folks these pre sbyterians while it was an occasion we didnt ex pect it was an occasion well never forget education equality by bill hodgson mpp york north premier davis precedentsetting announcement of provincial govern ment support for roman catholic high schools has changed the way ontario deals with public education many will be wondering if similar support will be available to schools operated by other denominations recognizing the contribution indepen dent schools in elementary and secon dary education bring to the province queens park has set up a commission to look at the role and status of these schools in light of the changed position of the separate school system this commission will document and comment on the contribution these schools bring to education in our pro vince it will also look at possible alternative forms of governing these schools and make appropriate recom mendations finally the commission will assess whether public funding will be desirable for independent schools considering their goals and the nature of their inde- pendence this new commission will be expected j to complete its findings by may of next year with responses to this report con cluded by january 1986 the premiers historic decision to bring full provincial funding to the ro man catholic school system is an impor tant milestone in the history of education in our province a new sense of unity will be introduced to education in our
