young timekeepers all minor hockey players don ated 56 half their weekend earnings the rec centre fund was also boosted by the sale of a number bricks at 250 each the amount of work put in by league members and their wives was formidable a 16 hour day was the rule rather than the exception and most were glad to get back to work on monday morning for a wellearned rest the opening ceremonies were held on saturday morning with mayor king dropping the puck and members of the rec centre fundraising committee in attendance in the playing department there were few surprises stouffville teams won ontario championship title for the third successive year i this years championship found was held at welling ton ontario after grabbing a 20 win against alymer in the quar ter finals on saturday michelle coppins getting both goals and the mvp award the record setting girls defeated godfrey in two straight games to clinch the title a quick goal by gloria mintz saw stouffville take an early lead in their first game against godfrey however they suddenly found themselves trailing 2- 1 going into the third period thompson and michelle coppins battled against what seemed to be the fas test timeclock in history before they rose to the occa sion with a couple of fine goals to give the stouffville gals a berth in the final following two very tough games the final proved to be something of an anti climax godfrey had given their best in the semifinal and had nothing left over the stouffville squad on the other hand allowed just one goal against them in the first period and then went on a scoring spree of embaras- sing proportions ending up with an 81 victory allison lowery and andrea tricker paced stouffville with a pair of goals apiece singles going to karen brodie mintz coppins and thompson in the assist department it was dawn stewart 3 thompson 2 nicole bird 2 coppins brodie teresa ewing and ann marie lacoursier lacoursier also received the most valuable player award minor hockey drops 10000 rumblings of discontent float through the air amongst minor hockey association members the town has decided to cut back their grant to 83 levels which means along with a 3 an hour increase for icetime something like a 20 hike in registration fees this year hockey treasurer edgrimshaw and association president john hutchinson are hopping mad over councils arbitary decision they were not even con sulted and in consequence are now left holding the bag they have to go to the membership for a 25 percent increase for next season a move not designed to make them popular unfortunately they have no choice just a couple of weeks ago dave bourne represent ing the association put forward a recommendation that grants be completely eliminated and that icetime be reduced to 30 an hour in turn the association would be free to pay its own way the suggestion was take under advisement by councillor jim sanders howev er as we all expected nothing came of it in the meantime grimshaw is raging and no doubt wondering how he can justifiably ask parents to pay an average of 100 registration for their kids to play hock ey next year i must say ed really does the rage bit rather well id hate to cross him meanwhile hutchinson is running around after eldred saying naughty things not that eldred takes any notice he recently informed me that there are other things in town other than hockey an observation that will no doubt earn him a strong outpouring of votes at the next election the soccer club is also in one big flap the reason of course is having only one acceptable soccer pitch for their representative teams all six of them they are doing something about it though the sug gestion is to remove the sod from the field due for demolition the one they are going tirdestroy to accomodate the new complex and relay it on the proposed new pitch further along they feel they can do the job in short notice by renting a sod cutter and get ting the whole club players parents and executive to pitch in and get it ready for playing on july or august knowing the enthusiasm of the club it could be done all it needs is a little bit of positive action from coun cils socalled recreation committee officers elected peewees fail in bid for the whitchurch- stouffville girls hockey association held their annual general meeting at latcham hall on april 4 and elected the following offic ers to the executive for the 198485 season president cliff dunkeld vicepresident barry eng land secretary kathy mcbeth treasurer al piette senior convenor george taylor hall dinner starts at 6 pm all ontario crown skating results grant nesbitts boys may not have won the all ontario championship title but theres no denying that being finalists in ontario bb peewee hockey is no mean achievement the credit union peewees gave it their best shot last weekend only to come up short in their title bid against a very strong belle isle squad from the windsor area after a tie and one loss on home ice the peewees were still optimistic prior to leaving for their three- the referees association were big contributors in the ahl tourney they generously donated 420 to the rec centre fund back row 0 to r wayne nugent greg allen dave gilmour front row i to r don reesor bill hormanson and lester ham game schedule at belle riv er last weekend they felt they were still very much in the series belle river pushed hard and went ahead early in the game however dan lar- mer from kevin blacktopp and jamie campbell tied it up for the clippers at the end of the first period two goals in the second period put belle river ahead 31 whereas a power- play advantage late in the period was lost by the clip pers they fired the puck everywhere but in the net some good shots ended up being deflected off sticks skates and posts it was frustrating belle river won going away with a pair of goals in the third period for a con vincing 51 win putting them within one point of the title if fridays effort was frustrating for the clippers and it was then saturdays game could only be de scribed as a championship performance by both teams belle river were again first on the board with kevin francis from baston tying it up for the clippers the second period was soft with belle river fir ing an unanswered marker to go ahead 21 the clippers controlled most of the game in the third period but couldnt pick up the tie belle river clin ching the title with a pair of goals in the closing minutes of play it has been an excellent season for the credit union peewees they have pro vided exciting hockey for the fans and displayed their own special brand of sports manship special thanks must go to the coaching staff of grant nesbitt nel son ham butch blacktopp and randy grey for their
