for womens clothing of world war ii vintage to be worn by the cast of markham little theatres upcoming production of waiting for the parade she is also the plays director earlier despite her busy schedule she had time for an interview although jilt is her foremost interest she finds time to be long to a book discussion group write a theatre column for yorkview magazine and has served on the woman of distinc tion awards committee for the last two years she had no previous experience in theatre prior to joining the little theatre group seven years ago l kinsmen j weekly up to in prizes services 945 am bible school class for all ages 1100 am morning worship message our lords last week no 3 betrayed nursery and junior congregation provided always a warm welcome at markham baptist church during that time she has done some acting and backstage work but mrs wyatt seems to have found her niche in directing for directing i took an intensive week long theatre ontario course at sudbury with alex stockwell and that was really helpful she said it was basic education in directing she also attended a weekend workshop with husband and wife directing team of david switzer and theresa sears and a oneday workshop with neil freeman those courses as a backround and just leaping in and trying it with the mlts production of bedroom farce gave me the confidence to go on she said when asked if she preferred directing to acting director mrs wyatt replied yes in some ways i do i think i might be a better director than i am an actress although you get very nervous while its all going on and you get nervous for everyone else involved not just yourself i think i find it personally more satisfying because it involves every aspect of the play instead of just doing one job in that sense it seems more creative nonetheless liz has not finished with acting she has yet to do a role that really pleases her what does she look for in selecting a play for production i think the first and most important is a well written script she said a script that says something it must be entertain ing too i look for theatrical values things that will be interesting and exciting to the audience and interesting and exciting for ustodosomethingabitoutofthe ordinary perhaps how does she determine the choice of actor for a role i herongate v barn theatre ftff aitona rd pickering v information and reservations please call l 2940426 il 1964 spring program now a variable ifel there are several things says liz physical type age other physical consid erations and psychological type some times you cast a person who is like the character in the play and sometimes it is more effective to cast against type lillian sievanen is a case in point physically she fits the role but she had to be changed from an attractive well turned out woman into a drab frumpy person who cares nothing ab out her appearance that part is easily done with costume and makeup psychologically her character mar garet is gloomy pessimistic and a wet blanket if you cast somebody who is the same in real life you might get a perform ance that is real do wner on the other hand if you cast a person with a positive disposi tion to play a pessimist you might get a stronger performance these things along with the suitability of the voice to the char acter experience and if their reading shows an understanding of the lines are all taken into consideration when asked how she viewed the actco festival competition liz responded with a philosophical shrug a competition is al ways a challenge but its chief reason for being is to provide a learning experience through being judged by someone who is knowledgeable and experienced in theatre otherwise you might perpetuate and even compound your weaknesses i remember a play in which a hudson bay blanket was used as a prop in the apartment of a chic new york woman the adjudicator spotted it immediately and pointed out that it was totally unsuitable to the character and set of the play of course everyone loves to win but our chief purpose is to put on a play thats what we do we hope to please the adjudicator but its one persons opinion at the same time we will be disappointed if we dont because a lot of hard work has gone into it winning would be the icing on the cake but if our audience likes what we do that is satisfaction enough we are doing it for ourselves our personal expression and to please our audience the festival is a side line except as a learning experience and a chance to have our work judged by some one who knows
