day unfortunately it was a strong ajax contingent that dominated play in the con solation final ajax fired five unanswered goals into the clipper net to give them the title salmaan shalmani manages to hang on to the ball as he dribbles low past a raider guard in friday afternoons game at sdss for the midget spartans it was their last game of the season the newmarket visitors left them at the starting gate with a 5027 win jim holt only juniors left in contention raiders rap spartans with triple win in senior basketball play the high school spartans ended the season with a very entertaining game against newmarket raid ers on friday afternoon earlier in the season newmarket had been 30 point victors so it was good to see that the spartans were capable of reducing their previous deficit by 20 points the game ended in a 5442 win for the visitors the 2 pm start saw over 200 teachers and students enjoy the action excellent passing and shooting helped the spar tans to a 2826 lead at the half but a cold third quarter saw the lead swing to the raiders mark savory showed a sharp eye hitting well to collect 13 points he was well paced by frank chieffallo also with 13 points and jim edwards popping 6 senior coach dave con- nell commented after the game that his squad were good by sole reason of the fact that the gym was full of fans it was their best game of the season the fans really pumped them up for this one he said with a 39 winloss record it means that basketball is over for the senior squad also the midgets who were convincingly bombed 5027 by their newmarket coun terparts in the last game of the day the junior cagers also went down against the all- conquering newmarket squads not only were they outplayed 5435 they barely managed to finish up in fourth spot the last playoff berth available for the york countys tourney in my opinion by jim holt having read the soc cer clubs master plan in search of excell ence one cannot help but feel that perhaps we should draft the soccer club executive onto council the clarity and precision with which they put their proposals is to say the least re freshing it is one of the most comprehensive and well thoughtout pieces i have ever en countered by an amateur sports orga nization the plan painstaking in its outline shows that the club is looking sever al years down the road with the accent on play er development at an early age commend- ably it is adopting a strategy that is followed by most european amateur clubs in the broad view it is the only one to take if it wishes to retain the in terest of players and supporters not that the club has been negligent in this to the contrary they have developed some fine soc cer teams over the last few years the panthers and castle royals to mention just two a dearth of soccer ex pertise within the club has always been a prob- lem for the wssc although the diehard nucleus has held every thing together since its inception now with three more experienced coaches tom morton bert fords and roy houston it is possible to introduce the master plan with some hope of success it would be nice if the clubs plans were sup ported in full by all the parents some who more often than not take little interest in the game other than drop ping off their children and taking them home immediately after the game the club needs and indeed deserves support from them also it is obvious that the club executive have had a big think on future de velopment in asking for input from all sources particularly parents and officials they are by no means dogmatic in their aspirations they de serve full support wintario grant as there are so many conflicting dates being thrown around regard ing the date of announce ment for the complex wintario grant rest assured that official word will be received by march 15 it was originally promised by the powers- thatbe that a decision would be reached by janl however a delay in the bureaucratic works has delayed tid ings and according to a wintario spokesman an official announcement will be made no later than midmarch it took the beckers milk midgets until well into the second period before they took control of port hope in their game on feb8 it was the third and as it turned out final gameof their first round playoff series the milkmen made heavy going of their 52 win both sides collected a whole slew of penalties stouffville 36 minutes and the visitors 33 while the port hope coach was requested to remove himself it was a chippy game in fact the milkmen looked like setting a new first period record for penalties seven in total before cool er heads prevailed and they got down to playing the kind of hockey expected of them with the stouffville penal ty box filled to overflowing netminder joe risk could be said to have had an exciting first period the gutsy little goalie put in a terrific per formance mike feasby and darryl brown found the net with a couple of opportunist goals while brent brown added a single assists went to doug mcquigge 2 ken burrows feasby darryl brown and dave fockler the milk men meet unionville at the arena tonight in the first game of the second round game starts at 830 pm floor hockey s s3 gsbsi brent brown grabs off a loose puck for a nice opportunist goal giving the beckers milk midgets a 52 win in their third and final game against port hope the popular at stouffville high last year about 80 students and 9 teachers took part this year it is even more popular so far according to organizer dave connell there are 150 students and 12 teachers wanting to join a team one of the games main attractions is that it can be played on the premises costs very little to organize and is a lot of fun due to a falling off of in terest rugby will not be played at sdss this year in fact according to coach connell there are no plans to reintroduce the game in the future however interest in floor hockey has soared it is in tended to introduce two leagues junior grade 9 and 10 and senior grade 1113 the season will get under way within the next two weeks a sigh of relief ran around the arena on monday night as the ejdwardsmurphy bantams recorded
