the durham east riding the proposed changes will increase the number of provincial legislative seats from 125 to 130 although some of the present ridings have been wiped off the map five new ridings have been created they government try to keep representation even around the province said stevenson they aim for about 70000 people per riding its not a matter of political wars being fought according to stevenson the present durhamyork area has about 75000 peo ple the studys figures were taken from the 1981 statistics canada report he said the boundaries which dont affect the muni cipal levels of government are changed approximately every ten years he said the current proposal wouldnt occur for a minimum of six months and the earliest the bill could be passed in the legislature is december 1984 its not likely to be really quick if a 1984 provincial elec tion occurs he stated the new boundaries would not be initiated the present ridings would remain the same stevenson said he doesnt expect a provincial election until the spring of 1985 the changes right now may not be final he stated however if they are they wont be in affect until an election and most likely not until the
