1 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmbmmmmfmmmvmmmmmmmpmm sa16 wednesday october 121983 editors mail dear sir i recently attended a town of markbam council meeting where in spite of a reasoned submission by a qualified planner david whittamore and over the objec tions of the local re sidents members saw fit to approve the planning de partments recom mendation that a domed stadium be built at cedar grove in southeast mar- kham it was with a sense of sadness and feeling of betrayal that i listenedto our representatives on council give their reasons for paving one of the few re maining rural areas of prime agricultu- ralland in south markham 1- gordon landon our ward council lor thought it a good idea because it would result in bet ter roads v 2 doreen quirk was all in favor be cause if built in cedar grove it would not be con structed on jail farm property which in her opin ion would des troy thornhill 3 ron moran the next mayor of mar kham gave a spi rited defence of our rural heritage and preservation of agricultural land 4 carol beu voted against the sta dium but warned she may be in favor of other develop ments in the area 5 elson miles voted against the stadium without comment and bud bonner a member of the board of the cedar grove com munity centre was absent although i understand he voted for the stadium in committee 6 au others in cluding the mayor voted in favor of the stadium while i can under stand a council which has success fully attracted in dustrial and re sidential communi ties to markham in the past ten years wanting to continue this course of ac tion is it not time we stopped and smel- led the roses there is an attempt by the proponents of the plan to infer that there is no one of any consequence living in cedar grove that it is all open government- bwnedland rather than attempt to re fute these argu ments i wish to re produce an article written by jim tho mas editor of the tribune in stouf fvil- le although dated august 1967 it very much describes the spirit still prevalent in this community a community like no other the hamlet of cedar grove is not a community great in numbers but what it lacks in size and population it more than makes up for in prideand enthu siasm this fact was in evidence every where during their centennial weekend cedar grove is a community like no other for in spite of its proximity to met ro the residents have managed to re tain a rural neigh- borliness that has formed a strong link between families for several genera tions and theres little sign the chain is weakening everything the folks of cedar g rove have they owe to themselves its been a joint effort all the way down the line and the resi dents can be justly proud of their accomplishments the community park and play ground must be seen to be appreciated the grounds are un matched in the area the acquisi- tion of their former ss 20 school build ing was completed only after many meetings with the township trustee and council mem bers childrens re creational needs have not been over looked with softbau teams for both boys and girls a pride in ones country and com munity has been stirred within every canadian in this canadas 100th birthday of confed eration but for the folks of cedar grove community pride is not a once- inahundred year flashinthepan affair its a con tinuing thing and long mayit last mr roman et al i urge you to take a moment and recon sider what you would be doing to our area if the sta dium is built here sincerely dwritchie tenth line cedar grove rr 1 markham john savings galore on bulk foods morel
