wednesday october 5 1983 sa3 pretty exhibitor and her scary scarecrow eightyearold amy britton a student attending st marks school stouffviue entered the first prize scarecrow at markham fair amy received an engraved plaque from the local association of guides and brownies shes the daughter of al and rosalin britton stouffer street north stouffviue jim thomas markham fair encore for ballantrae sisters theyve done it again the carter sis ters ann and susan are champions in two divisions at markham fair- ann in the eighteen and under class and susan in the top student category they are the daughters of john and marjone car ter bauantrae ann 16 is a grade 11 student at stouf f- ville dst secon dary school she had 23 winners in her 33 exhibits she retains the kj beamish trophy she won in 82 the presentation was made sunday in addition to the grand cham pionship she also won two specials the best apple pie presented by ursula oconnor and best liquid embroidered tshirt ann was most pleased with the first prize she re ceived on her dres sed dou it took over three months to complete several of her entries were started as early as last spring ann saysshe plans to enter again next year maybe even twomore years until shes eighteen her sister susan 12 received the travelways li mited trophy fri day shes a grade 7 student at ballan trae public school she like ann is a repeat winner from 1982 donna chil- vers representing the travelways firm made the tro phy presentation susan placed 32 exhibits in the school childrens section she also re ceived four prizes in the eighteen and under class the elementary school with the high est number of points was milliken mills the howard cos- burn memorial tro phy was presented by mary cosburn in the eighteen and under class thornhill secon dary school was the highpoint winner receiving the sterl ing trust award recipients of other specials m- cludedlisa weathenll stouff viue decorated cakechristmas theme vvmvvil- hams alfona de- corated flower pot tina smith markham hand puppet glen de- geer beer road scarborough stuf fed farm animal amy britton stouf fer street north stouffviue best scarecrow shaw- na mcgregor r r 1 gormley best in show grades 5 to 8 and matthew priestley mar kham best in show nursery to graded not milkfed squash 296 lbs a 296 pound squash the very thought of lifting such a monster resulted in gasps from kids and headshakes from adults as they viewed the huge specimen at mar kham fair it was produced by don jennings of lee avenue milliken and easily won the red ribbon award in a class sponsored by far mer jacks gardens of unionville and stouffviue the runnerup was entered by sarah smalley of mount albert it tipped the scales at 235 pounds third and fourth placewere taken by robert mackenzie of pickering 225 pounds and murray pain ter of stouffviue 145 pounds the original seed came all the way from nova scotia anna jennings dons wife told the tribune however the mother of this particular squash was homegrown right at miuiken she was a 262 pounder last year and won second place fertilizer and rain water are the right combination mrs jennings explained however contrary to comments heard at the fair this 1983 whopper was not milk- fed as is sometimes the case cutting smauer squash from the vine also helps she said it auows all the nounshment to flow to one source don and his mother carted the squash from the garden to their van in a wheelbar row son mark helped carry or roll it into the general exhibits building what now for possibly the largest squash a markham fair will ever see why the largest jackolantern milliken will ever see big spuds thename smauey and quality potatoes are synonomous the smalley name and big potatoes also go hand in hand it came as no real surprise then that michael smauey of rr 3 mt albert was the winner of the tribunesponsored big potato contest at markham fair his entry weighed in at 2 lbs 2 a ounces x only a halfounce behind was a large spud unearthed from the simpson potato farm at bauantrae it tipped the scales at an 2 lbs 2 ounces the third place position was taken by jennifer smauey also of rr 3 mount albert jennifers entry weighed 2 lbs onehalf ounce i- the three participants in the competition wiu receive 10 15 and 3 respectively honorable mention was given a potato entered by blaine hockley of goodwood it weighed an even two pounds the display was arranged by frank hen- v jy rr 1 claremont sixteenyearold ann carter of ballantrae was a repeat win ner in the eighteen and under class at markham fair her proudest of 33 exhibits was a beautifully dressed doll ann is a grade ii student at stouffviue dist secondary school jim thomas
