via scj rb il sa24 wednesday september 14 editors mail 1983 attack dear mr thomas j- 4 my letter of august 24 concerning the need for an active and viable tennis club was an objective statement of the facts of the evolution of the ballantrae tennis club unlike the subjective condescend- ing accusatory tone of mr holts column of august 31 nothing is solved by such per sonal attacks by one in a privueged posi tion within the communication media i consider it an attack when he insinuated that the membership lists are false and that i am responsible for that supposed falsehood in my opinion this insinua tion is a complete abrogation of bis profes sional integrity the membership list is not my list but the ballantrae tennis club official mem bership list random phone calls to any listed names would elicit a positive answer as to membership in the ballantrae tennis club but such calls would take time and research something in my opinion that is lacking in mr holts treatment of this sub ject my intent was not to justify the time allotment to a tennis club that has 150 senior and 90 junior members two hun dred forty people cannot be considered a small minority the playing time needed by even ten to twenty cannot be compared with that required by the active club mem bers the members who play regularly are hot selfish but enthusiastic and want to see the club grow even more to encourage the clubs growth and the growth of tennis in general the ballantrae tennis club opens four of its seven weekend round robins to nonmembers the canada day tournament which real ized a profit of 3080 donated to the re creation complex fund had only one non- member play er a junior from stouf f ville the ballantrae lions steer roast round robin had approximately six non- members brought by a member in attend ance aside from these specific activities the courts are open at other times for public play the courts are not too busy most days between one and seven or eight pm non- members are welcome to play whenever the courts are free as well as in public times as in any activity people wish to be involved only when there is a lineup an examination of our membership lists indicates only a very small fraction of reg- istered families are not residents of whitchurch stouffville since we utilize neighboring communities facilities non- resident membership in our club is but a token measure of repayment for bur use of their capital intensive facilities such as pools and arenas also as a resident of whitchurch stouffville my taxes pay for the maintenance of all facilities whether i- use them or not at regulated times i should for a fee have access to all facili ties withinthe whole townj v from the tone of mr holts column those of us who live in vivian cedar val ley bloomington etc do not have the right to use these courts as we do not reside among the honest burghers of ballan- trae thank goodness the general populus of ballantrae does not think in such a parochial manner thinking like that could fwa lead to the demise of the ballantrae tennis club as 10 of the 14 member executive do not live within the confines of ballantrae no club no court useage problem- no club no organized lessons and program mes for the novice to the advanced no programmes novice and players without partners unable to get a game why go to the courts when you are new or lack a part ner if no one is there or if those who are there wont play with you the resultant empty courts will make few people happy the club members try to make all feel wel come no matter their level of abiltiy please if you are interested in advanc ing the game of tennis in whitchurch stouffville come to the courts and talk to any of our friendly members dont con demn us without a fair trail if you have any guestions or problems please call me 4735846 i would pleased to hear from you or assist you in any way eileen m gayton rr 3 stouffville dear editor t t plans for the future were
