weather was cold windy and wet but they pressed hard in attack and showed toughness in de fence strikers drae glover and ritchie holden both ham mered in hat tricks but in general play was inclined to be sloppy the 70 win over thornhill augers well for the panthers this season however coach alfons rubbens was not en thused countering that the score gave little indication of the quality of play it was below par he opined in contrast last weekend saw the panthers draw praise from many metro a league coaches despite los ses against erin mills and mississauga they did however pull off a 2 1 win local golfers wayne and glenn jackson formed a team for last weekends tournament at spring lakes a chance in a million was how tom wood de scribed his win in the lab- bats light proam golf tournament tom along with sons paul and barry describe them selves as strictly weekend golfers who would have been content to win two or three golf balls as a memen to of their entry we play at the cottage during the summer but are not fanatics he said fanatics or not the wood trio proved themselves highly competitive through- out the tournament finishing 2nd on the first day 7th on the second and coming through to win the amateurtcam award on the third in weather conditions that were less than ideal the idea of entering was more or less on a whim i thought it would be a chance to have myself and the boys enter one big tournament just once in our lives little did i realize what the out come would be the idea was to enjoy playing with the pros winning it never entered our heads he said in addition to each team member winning a stereo beer stem and golf balls the winners also received a beautiful wedgewood tro phy bowl which according to tom will take pride of place in the family trophy coach is staff teacher linjones in niy opinion by jim holt sports editor we try to be impartial received a telephone call on monday morning from warren skinner warren a member of the kerry industrial slowpitch team here in town wanted to know why betz pools and the buttermakers received the most press coverage in the victoria day slow- pitch tournament the answer to that is simple they happened to be playing on the main diamond when i was there with my camera added to which they were both playing what i considered a potentially winning team mar- khams calathumpians when covering an event as large as last weeks tournament re gardless of what sport is being played then the press has an obligation to try and pinpoint the winners and make sure that they receive proper coverage try telling your editor that you could only get photos of the fourthplace finishers and see what happens always assum ing you are still there to find out it is a difficult task to be everywhere at the same time and please everybody ask the raiders they were not only playing in the tournament they were running it as well the question of favouritism does not arise although i must admit that the butter- makers have had more than their fair share of publicity in the last six months albeit some of it adverse it is a physical impos sibility for one person to cover every team and event in a town the size of stouffville however i would say that through out the year there are many coaches and man agers who come rain or shine devotedly report the heppemngs of their teams every week it matters not whether it is t ball or senior level they arrive on the desk for publication every monday morning anyone who feels short changed on sports coverage is welcome to put it down on paper we shall take it from there and if there is space available print it par excellence nice to see a local team show the 200 amateur golfers at the labbats light proam tourna ment the way to the win ners podium tom wood and his sons barry and paul put in a terrific performance over the weekend in winning the team award tom has always been a keen golfer he is al ways up front when the ballantrae lions hold their annual golf tour ney but i doubt if he will ever surpass this one in fact hell be lucky if anyone will ever want to play with him again my favourite hockey player keith acton has a mean drive i wasnt there but someone told me he drove 300 yards to the edge of the green ah well once an athlete al ways an athlete divine intervention with the boss man jim thomas away over the weekend i found myself covering the dedication of st marks church very impressive it was too whilst taking pictures i happened to overhear eldred the unready make a passing remark to cardinal emmett carter that st marks would probably need an extension pretty soon if development in the town proceeded as planned i could not help but feel that he would do well to leave matters spir itual to the experts and instead ask for a little divine intervention in the matter of building the new arena the way things are going it is the only hope we have left ti cam fella wins world series adding further lustre to his series of
