own trophy a fine performance by the high school junior rugby team gave them the con solation trophy in last wednesdays rugby tourna ment at sdss dropping a 124 decision in their opener against brock the spartans went on to blank gw williams 220 before disposing of king city 120 in the final the spartans came to life in their game against gw williams opening up the wingline and pushing hard in the scrum to dominate play throughout some fine runs were made by doug sharp lee brown corey anderson and steve tor- rington who put in excellent performances to go over the line for four points apiece while darren hardy com pleted three out of the four conversions with pinpoint place kicking torrington replaced giles elliot at scrumhalf in the final and did a creditable job in getting the running backs under way the pack worked hard in the scrim mage and gave excellent coverage when breaking bernie schopf the spar tans big forward bulldozed his way over the city line for four points coming close on another try but foiled by the sheer weight of king citys tackling ralph dube well supported by the forwards made it 80 with a smart sprint down the touch line hardy converting both with an unerring boot in the semifinals it was dunbarton blanking ander son 120 while the eventual championship winners pickering edged brock 64 victoria park fielding a midget team went down 16- 0 to king city in the consola tion round they were no match for the bigger and heavier king city side the final threatened to go on forever pickering and dunbarton proved them selves well matched with neither team giving an inch of ground without a strug gle the game going well into overtime before pick ering scored the winning try they finally made it sean torrington right has good reason to look pleased the high school junior rugger team had just pulled off a win in their own tourney for the first time ever taking two showing as generous a spirit off the ice as on keith acton stouffvilles favourite hockey player presented a personal cheque for 1100 to mayor eldrcd king at last weeks meeting of council the donation is towards the proposed new arenacomplex athletes star in york meet stouffville high school athletes did well at the york regional track and field championships held at york j university last week the two day event attracted the very best athletes from schools in the jyork region making for osome very hot competition t however stouffvilles com paratively small band of 40 entries kept the spartan spirit high- returning some fine individual perform ances and in the process ensuring that sdss will be well represented at the georgian bay cham pionships being held tomor row thursday some of the more cut- standing performances came from athletes like midget ben dcrksen der- ksen in his first try at throwing the javelin came within a metre of breaking the meet record with his 47 metre first place finish he also placed third in the shot put chris brown led the field in the spartans qual ified for the the georgian bay championships congratulations to you all in my opinion by jim holt sports editor out of three games in the consolation round of last weeks eightschool competition at sdss making the presentation is dave connell head of physed i the miser touch budget cuts are inevit able in a time of res traint and one can sym pathize to a certain ex tent with council in their endeavour to be fair to all concerned however if the current slashing of the parks and recreation budget is anything to go by then fairness is the last consideration given presently- there are around 1200 people young and old alike playing or wanting to play ball this season the chance of satisfying them all is slim indeed despite overtures throughout the years by the minor ball associa tion and other clubs to upgrade diamond facili ties the pleas have fal len on deaf ears now at last neglect in main taining the facilities is catching up with us most of the diamonds are in very poor shape added to which is a swinging 3000 cut for diamond maintenance its enough to make the volunteers throw up their hands in despair and ask themselves why they bother why in deed this years cuts have taken a hefty 38000 out of the parks and recrea tion boards budget some of it justifiable but certainly not when it comes to the mainte- nance of playing fields v it amazes me that while council debates the expenditure of mil- llions of dollars on a new arena complex we dont have enough money to maintain the rather grubby facilities we already- have talk ab out putting the cart be fore the horse the truth of the matter is that we are being shortchanged as far as culture and recreation are concerned the lib rary museum and latcham art gallery are all coming under the res traint hammer much to the ire of the library board who will have to accept an 11000 cut in their budget conse quently the quality of our small but active cultural life what little there is of it will be affected but to more positive things fireproof saturday saw the offi cial opening of the new fire hall at ballantrae the long awaited facility is more than welcome to the residents and the people involved in the project deserve a pat on the back hats off to ron robb who spearheaded the training of the volunteer force also to fire chief walt smith for all his help last but not least a hearty thanks to the volunteer firemen who for the last yearhave been- in strict training for their job and also re painted and rewired the facility to habitable standards to larry grove james white carl insley ted mclen- nen rick rose iain mcvarish eric blundon and warren foster a big thank you from all of us we shall certainly sleep better at nights knowing you guys are there on the job spartahspirit school spirit is a nebu lous thing at the best of times however in the last twelve months there has been a resurgence of it at sdss looking around and talking to the students one gets the im pression that the high schoolis once again on an upswing whereas a year or so ago there was little if any of the in domitable spartan spirit of the seventies appa rent credit for this must go to principal michael muir and the staff also i suspect to the semes ter sytem which gives students more time in the iclassroomt theold system of changing rooms every thirty mi nutes did nothing for the concentration of either staff or students obviously our educa- tors are doing something right whose confused while at the opening of the ballantrae fire hall i had a few words with councillors tom wood and jim sanders i was dismayed to learn that both men are disillu sioned with current attempts to launch the new arenacomplex jim sanders inferred that council were as con- fused as the rest of us whereas tom woods suggested that whatever building is eventually erected it would not do justice to the town x both had a pet peeve against the local media and i cant say that i am unsympathetic to their concerns both feel that there is not enough coverage given to coun cil members well gent- lemen the door of the office is always open let us hear from you soccer sidelines the sudbury soccer club paid a flying visit to stouff ville over the weekend to take part in a three way round robin between whitchurchstouffville and a formidable st andrews team from the metro league the mini tourney was to prepare for the up coming mississauga tournament- while standrews battled for their reputation the stouffville panthers were out to prove that they are more than ready to take on the big boys in the metro league a teams a panther defensive error in the first half gave st andrews a 10 lead but not for long a sizzling fourty yard drive by midfielder ernie sluga saved the panthers reputation so everyone was happy with the tie it also stopped panther coach alfons rub- bens from chewing his fing ernails down to the knuckle against sudbury a for midable club indeed the panthers did what was more or less a rerun of last years great encounter they sneaked a 10 win over the visitors the tireless panther strikers had no cause for complaint mid fielders frank nardie travis white and jason melko created numerous plays for both dube bader and jamie christie to display their ex- plosive running ability down the sidelines whereas that very talented centre striker drea glover showed great ability as a target man the discipline of the panther defenders was ex cellent richard altman and john humphries were solid on the back line while sweeper wes barbour made several great saves in assisting goalkeeper dan humphries shutout in their game against standrews sudbury were hammered 51 v the whitchurcli- stouffville soccer club will be entering teams squirt minor atoms panthers and royals in the sudbury tournament scheduled july 30 to augl last year the club re turned from sudbury with both silver and gold medals
