a clipper s junior c squad when the cteam strength is made up of s less than tenpercent of local t talent now at last the ques tion has not only been brought out in the open but already there are hockey organisations preparing a brief to use satur day nights as a local talent night that would hopefully once again fill the depleted are na bring in some revenueand give residents the chance to watch more interesting hockey the arguments put forward by three stouffville hockey organisations the classics clipper oldtimers and ahl selects are more than valid between them they could attract fine hockey teams with in a hundred mile radius that would keep the saturday night prime time slot filled with local talent and give us back some thing we have not had for some time entertainment currently going the rounds is a circular by the three orga nisations asking residents to fill in a questionaire regarding their hockey habits the re sults of which will be promptly printed in the tribune when available people closely connected with hockey in stouffville see that in their present form the clipper juniors cannot con tinue for another seasonif only because of the lack of interest by both fans and local players also to be considered is the fact that no sponsor is going to con tinue supporting a team with such a miserable record a s construction are reputed to have poured a considerable amount of money into junior team sponsorship over the last few years thousands is the figure being used and all to no purpose as there are now only two or is it three local players no one would- ever suggest that being a goalie is a peaceful ijlpastimeand sunday mornings ahl game between the red wings and capitals proved it the game came close to getting out of hand glove as far as capital goalie bob wagg was concerned left oh strength john hutchinson chairman of the parks and recreation committee and a leading light in local hockey happenings agreed that the future of the clippers must be considered they cannot continue in their presenrform he said but then went on to dispel any thoughts of introducing an in termediate team other places have tried that but not very successfully he con cluded with the junior squad now sitting firmly in the cellar it looks as if spare prime time might well be available by the time february arrives if so then someone is going to have to fill in the blank spaces frank- ly i would like to see the ahl playoffs played on a saturday night having watched sunday mornings game between the red wings and the capitals both are sitting at the top of the league roster we could be guaranteed first class hockey with a local flavor reach final stouffville protective rust- proofing midget girls team reached the finals of the peter borough tournament before running out of steam going down to a mississauga a i however despite a couple of strong challenges from mike jones in the semifinals the girls up- 4 who netted the red wings only goal bob remained hisusual cool self and put in a super performance for his teams 21 win over the league front runners jim holt sjr fcsfe f mm piumon by jim hqltsportsedirg if only j had longer arms ctak set brampton 43 with goals from michelle coppiris2 while shauna blakcand- bridgette edwardsadded sing les assists went to cathy carr and shauna blake the team received individual finalist trophies on completion of the tournament now that the thunder actually it was more of a murmur of political battle has died away and the prom- ises made in the heat of de bate are long forgotten it would be interesting if the pronew arena lobby were to ask council if they are still intending to go ahead with the project if the question comes as a surprise to some of the more politically naive supporters of our long overdue sports complex it shouldnt re member it was only the pushing and lobbying of sports organizations that got the last council off its collec tive behind r strangely enough by an odd quirk of timing about a year before the election even then most members were reluctant heroes and their response was if anything less than enthusiastic mayor eldred king a veritable scrooge when it comes to the municipal dol lar has never really been overly keen about hitting the taxpayer for more money for the project up to 150 a year per householder and a lot higher if they dont hurry up and- do something council lor jim sanders an able but fartoo cautious man he wants to research every thing in sight would have the costs double by the time his elected committees had done with it the ladies may surprise us but i very much doubt it and do something i cant remember themhay- ingvery much to say- about sports facilities in their elec tion manifestos they are after all predominantly en vironmentalists asfar as the- remainderipf lcouncujareuconccrned there are ho fatfid for or against lobbies jim rae does not seem to be against theidea tom wood as usual will probably go with the flow and wilf morley is also amenable however unless someone digs up a ged stonehouse or better still another bill kamps the vyeasvareigoirig tqlosje their momentum andwe may well be lookingafthe isame tatty old building five- years down the road- presently thewholeldea is in limbo becausea steerf ing committee has yet to be v formed and the powerful parks and recreation com mittee who make the selec tions will not be elected until next month any hotblooded complex- supporter especially if he is a sports buff with children of a like nature- and most are should start toying with the idea of getting on or alterna- tively supporting someone who is interested in being appointed to the parks and recreation committee and getting the dream underway unfortunately all parks and recreation board selec tibns are finally approved by council although lip service is paid to recommendations y by the previous years board who if they so desire can re- commend themselves en- bloc for reappointmetit so imagine the chances of some bloodyminded pro- complex enthusiast putting himself up for election tothe board while reminding council members of their preelection promises his chances would be in my opinion rather slim after all no politician wants to be reminded of all those glib promises why not playfit safe and bask inthe warmth of postelection success f
