jl k the tribune wednesday mabch m 1m2 i mance by jim irving dickering the wiz came to pickering high school last week and while it didnt exactly sizzle it didnt fizzle either in fact- the many students who made up the production probably did as well as any group of limited experience could be- expected to do in such an ambitious un dertaking and the wiz is certainly that adapted from l- frank baums perennial favorite the wonderful wizard of oz the wiz is a bright and sassy musical originally written for a black company and that is where the dif- ference and a big difference it is comes in the young pickering company although full of energy and enthusiasm was not quite able to fit into that casual style or employ that kind of jargon a mixture of the drug culture and the street with the sort of nonchalance the show demands nor should it the farm folk from kansas are a far cry from the swinging inhabitants of the wiz the musical was intended for for example it completely misses when the wide- eyed innocent dorothy veil played by diane e bruce solomon bclllb barrister solicitor suite 206 72 wellington st west markham ontario l3p 1 a8 telephone 416 29wm6 prelerred areas of practice family law civil litigation corporate and commercial law initial consultation fee 25 00 hooker says you dont gotta do nothin in reply to a question at one stage even given the limits of good syntax in some rural com munities it is doubtful dorothy or any other member would speak in quite that haphazard fashion also the musical itself shows its limits when the biggest laugh of the night comes when the cowardly lion another excellent performance brian jones answers the wizs question what do you want with to get the hell out of here those observations aside let it be said that pickerings version of the wiz was thoroughly enjoyable and its too bad the friday night audience anyway which ap preciated every moment was so small its also un fortunate considering the quality of the production and the amount of work that went into it that it was on only for four nights however that is the way of high school shows and at least the students and staff in- volved have the chance to make the most of their imaginations and talents in every department acting building designing choreography singing playing makeup sound directing and producing and if the singing sometimes suffered a bit from lack of projection or tonal quality and the dancing was restricted to a few simple manoeuvers the show never once lacked for spirit or pace dorothy the little kansas farm girl transported to the mythical land of oz by a tornado was suitably ingenuous and awestruck by the world she found herself in although she could be quite firm and out spoken as the cowardly lion and the wiz found out to their discomfort at times her part was also well- sung- by diane hooker whose voice was of the kind weve come to expect after hearing the original dorothy judy garland in the role voluminous and full of feeling the wicked witch played by audrey van nus probably came as close as anybody could to what would seem to be the spirit of the wiz with her lively and catchy version of no bad news leslie snowden although not quite so formidable in the vocal department was another excellent witch while- dave moore as the scarecrow and mike wierenga as the tinman were equally at home in their parts the costume department under convenor barb robinson also deserves great praise here as with all of its creations as for the wiz who believed in the simple things of life power prestige and- money be played the role as one who will be fooling them in oz for a long time yet the rest of the cast and crew the band and directors hm snowden and virginia sullivan also deserve praise and no doubt somewhere out there in the land of oz the wiz will go on recalling and recalling that visit so that they always will be remembered with just that has arrived in stouffville ontario largest auto-
