secondary schools commencement exercises friday night making the presentation is principal michael muir jim thomas harry stouf f er proud of heritage insulate centre bruce ike harper town farmer excellent athlete stouffville a beautiful bouquet of flowers at the base of the casket contained a card that read stouffville clippers sr hockey cham pions nearby was another that said simply the neigh bors these in part described what stouff ville meant to bruce ike harper and what he meant to the town- sports and friends often a combination of the two bruce died satur day in scarborough centenary hospital following an illness of 2v4 years he was 60 born at the end of obrien avenue the son of william and vera harper he grew up on the farm and continued to operate it following the death of his father when the property was sold 14 years ago he continued to stay on in the farm home until moving to lloyd avenue in 1978 bruce or ike as he was commonly called was an excellent athlete as a defence- man in hockey he was never one to be shoved around and his shot often from the blueline usually evaded the best of goaltenders he played both junior and intermediate with markham and senior with stouffville and peterborough on oc casions he also helped out with coaching and officiating he enjoyed curling and bowling when time would permit but most of all he loved fishing he was a member of the wildcat hunt club that in cluded several from town thirtyseven years ago last july he married mabel spang and to the union was born a daughter joan mrs jim hall and a son bill both of stouffville he has three grandchildren jeff hall chris and john harper his mother vera harper also resides in stouffville rev robt price a neighbor on lloyd avenue conducted the service tuesday from the oneill funeral chapel stouffville with interment stouffville cemetery stouffville his love of christ and his love for others is an example to all of us his memory is a source of comfort to may 22 1893 died peacefully at home nov 10 he had been in declining health since undergoing surgery last may recognized as mr stouffville during the towns 1977 centennial year he appreciated the heritage that was his and upon which the former village was based born on what is now the alex davidson farm 19th avenue markham the son of noah and alice hamilton stouffer he later resided on the present floyd forsyth property west of hwy 47 almost fiftyone years ago he married mildred leh man a union that was built on love and respect a quiet family gathering marking their halfcentury milestone was enjoyed at the home of lola forsyth last december harry stouffer loved his church at tending first markham baptist on the ninth line of markham where his mother was the organist and later the missionary church in stouffville he was a graduate mortician assisting the late le tim oneill in stouffville for several years he also clerked in boadway s and houstons drug store on main street although quiet in his own way he possessed a keen sense of humor a trait that won him a wide circle of friends to those who knew him well be was uncle harry besides his wife he is survived by one daughter geraldine mrs frank johnson of willowdale and one sister edna mrs eldon smith of stouffville he was predeceased by a brother ernie and a sister mrs levi for syth the oneill chapel was to do it but not at ballantrae this month when it was agreed that the community centre required ceiling in sulation to curb ex cessive beat loss groups and local residents beaded by kim rogers banded together in a do-it- yourself project unequalled in the area town council approved an ex penditure of 2033 for materials and the people went to work ive never seen anything quite like it said community centre board chair man pierre lebel the response was terrific members from the lions club the tennis club and the venturers v along with private citizens worked in shifts from 9 am through until almost six many brought their own tools a continuous flow of coffee and sand wiches was provided by the tennis club under the supervision of president eileen gayton kim rogers of ballantrae was a driving force behind a do-it- yourself project recently that installed insulation in the com munity centre there the town supplied the materials but all the work was volunteer when the new section of the centre was completed in 1976 no insulation was included because of this omission heat loss was costing close to 6000 a year in ad dition it was common for the overhead water supply to freeze with this phase of the project completed jim holt the ballantrae work force will turn its attention towards insulating the walls hopefully before another winter rolls around turkey supper was a feast mt zion when the stewards of mt zion united church sponsor a turkey supper its a feast on sunday after noon and evening 345 people were served including about 40 at the 8 pm sitting that hadnt been included in the schedule fourteen turkeys and 120 pies were prepared in advance by the ladies of the church the men did the serving assisted by the young people of the congregation the committee chairman was allan carson the demand for tickets was so spon taneous i think we could have sold another hundred one member told the tribune about 100 were accommodated at each of three sittings with an additional 40 tacked on at the end home from england mr and mrs charles nolan duchess street stouffville returned last week from an enjoyable visit with their daughter and son- inlaw yrria and tony campaign they hope to raise 3000 verna duncan aided church stouffville verna duncan will long be remembered for her quilting skills and beautiful crochet work she used these talents in the work of the ucw a dedication that was much appreciated by this organization mrs duncan passed away suddenly nov 8 at her home on church street where she lived alone she was 76 born verna elizabeth summerfeldt daughter of howard and sarah summerfeldt she grew up on the 6th concession of markham and attended cody corners public school following her marriage to archie duncan they farmed near cashel and later on the 3rd con cession of whitchurch township mrs duncan had been a member in the congregation of stouffville united church since moving to town about 17 years ago she also enjoyed her association with the silver jubilee club surviving is one son joseph of barrie three grandchildren three great grandchildren two sisters ina mid- dleton unionville darlene larose ingersol and three brothers charles of woodbridge mervyn of newton robinson and clarence of stouffville rev cecil tiller of stouffville united church conducted the service nov 11 from the oneill funeral chapel with interment
