youre picking up two price tags one is the cost of the appliance the other is the cost of the electricity to operate it over its lifetime until recently the energy price tag was missing you paid now but had little idea of what you would go on paying now theres a second tag in the form of an energuide label what is energuide energuide is an appliance label ling program under which energy con sumption stickers are attached tp new refrigerators freezers dishwashers clothes washers and kitchen ranges offered for sale in canada the pro gram was initiated by the government of canada and is operated in coopera tion with consumer groups appliance manufacturers and retailers electrical utilities and provincial governments comparison shopping the whole idea behind energuide is to help you the consumer to compare the energy cost lags of appliances and deter mine which is the best buy comparison shop ping and wise decisions can save you a great deal of energy and money over the long run how does energuide work the label on each new appliance shows the number of kilowatt hours of electricity kwh consumed by that appliance in one month of normal operation this rating is determined by a test developed by the canadian standards association for all appliances labelled the number is represent ative of the energy that the appliance will con sume under normal operation in your home its not exact the test could never duplicate precisely all the conditions in your home but it is correct as a comparative rating to indicate the difference between models total cu ft kwh month to convert the energuide rating in kwh to dollars multiply by the cost of a kwh in your area the current national average is 40 per kwh this will give you the operating cost lor one month k wh per month x cents per kwh cost per month work out the lifetime cost to really appreciate the importance of energuide ratings figure out the lifetime energy cost of the appliance the average major appliance lasis 15 years or 180 months multiply the cost per month by 1 80 and ihe number you get will be impressive and it will be an underestimate because it assumes a constant electricity price over 1 5 years two refrigerator examples consumer and corporate affairs canada publishes each ear the energuide ratings for new appliances from the 1981 refrigerator listing come ihe following examples ty and defrost system model a twodoor top mounted freezer frost free 182 117 model b twodoor top mounted freezer frost free 171 190 over a 15year lifetime model a although slightly larger would cost you s84240 for energy at a constant 40kwh model bs energy cost would be si 368 00 thats a difference of 552560 when more is less the appliance with the lower energuide ratings may cost a little more to buy they usually have more insulation better motors more sophisticated controls but as the above example shows the value of the energy they save over their life cycle will pay for the extra investment many limes over so when youre shopping for major appliances look at both tags do a little figuring and buy the model that will be cheapest over its life cycle not just the cheapest on its purchase price an energuide bonus for all besides providing consumers with information for comparison shopping the energuide program is having another effect appliance manufacturers are improving he energy efficiency of their models already there have been some notable improvements and experts predict that within a few years major appliances will be consuming about 40 less electricity- while providing the same services thats a powerful example of how consumer power and industrial innovation go hand in hand mail io government of canada energy mines and resources canada po box 3500 postal station c ottawa
