explanation dear jim now that the busy 1981 softball season is over i wish to express my thanks to the following executive members al piette bob belisle jim wagg and joe barber my other reason for writing is to reply to a letter published in the tribune earlier this year regarding allstar softball in stouffville it referred specifically to the junior mens soft ball team i wish to explain the associations position early in november 1980 we called a general meeting through an advertisement in the paper we stated the reason the location the time and the date the purpose was to discuss the future of t allstar softball in stouffville and elect an executive it was very disap pointing that so few people attended however a few dedicated persons agreed to carry on in order to have a1i- star softball teams you must be able to play in a league in order to have teams you must be assured of players we therefore had to conduct our registration early in the year au leagues are formed by the middle of march we had enough players register for the following categories and had the following teams novice girls squirt boys midget girls bantam boys and in termediate ladies this is only a small portion of what must be done but i feel at this time i must reply to the letter regarding the junior men the executive did the following before the end of february 1981 l contacted the 1980 sponsors who agreed to support the team again in 1981 2 arranged through the recreation committee for 50 per cent operating costs 3 contacted frank hendy who agreed to coach the team 4 had the team entered in the oshawa and district league several of the players were contacted in advance however most later decided they wouldnt be playing for stouffville some were retiring while others were trying out for other clubs i was very disap pointed with the end result this team was once a real drawing card for softball in town because of this many fans were disappointed too i feel the executive has been unfairly criticized the operation was in full swing all the players had to do was indicate their support maybe im being unfair to these boys because after all they did win three cham pionships in a row i guess as long as someone does the work no one notices but as soon as a problem arises the critics ap pear i intend this letter not for the players but for the backseat critics who holler and yell from a distance however when help is required in organizing coaching umpiring etc they disappear perhaps when we once again hold our meeting in november which will be advertised in the paper they will prove me wrong by showing up and helping out i hope so i thank you for allowing me this space in order that i might voice my thoughts sincerely cliff dunkeld executive member the york county
