community whitchurchstouffville is indeed fortunate to have such a group all volun- i teers who give of their time and talents as a source of entertainment within the town its one of those ingredients too often taken for granted that tends to make a municipality a better place in which to live the band here has not received the praise and support it deserves partly because public appearances have been minimal this doesnt mean its membership hasnt been active its just that most of whats been happening has been going on behind the scenes the results were obvious at the concert in latcham hall dec l and at the high school thursday both events were two of the most entertaining evenings weve experienced all year instrumental music on its own is good so also is the choir from orchard park school by combining the two the leaders of each were assured of success and a success it was a program without equal keeping a volunteer band together is a difficult chore for the membership is con tinually changing what the late ted hawley started david howard has carried on mr howards patience and perseverance is commendable his easygoing manner has made the venture an enjoyable experience while unfair to overtax the members time wed like to see the band perform in the stouffviue park on sunday evenings this summer regularly scheduled concerts we feel would be appreciated by many people something to think about a hazardous intersection over a year ago a young stouffviue couple died in a twocar crash at the in tersection of davis drive and hwy 48 north of vivian the driver of the other vehicle was also killed and his passenger injured while were not about to speculate as to what caused the collision any motorist who travels that route will support our contention that its the poorest illuminated corner in the area even under favorable weather conditions north and southbound traffic is continually overshooting the turnoff towards newmarket when the site is shrouded in fog or blanketed by snow the situations even worse when two main highways intersect daylighting of the corner should be part and parcel of the project one without the other is unsatisfactory and unsafe past experiences would seem to indicate that the region of york believes in half- measures when it sets out to do a job rather than spend a few additional dollars and do the work up right the engineering department creates a hazard then sits back to see how many innocent people will be killed or injured before it does the rest we have no figures on the accident toll at this location but its safe to say that for every collision there have been countless near- misses let the province and the region get their act together spend a few extra dollars and reduce road deaths to a minimum stouffviue will respond once again tragedy through fire has chilled the christmas spirit in stouffviue the loss of ones home ones business and ones personal possessions is regrettable the loss of ones life is heartbreaking as much as we may regret the latter theres nothing any of us can do with respect to the former theres much we can do as much as marie adams would have done for anyone else our town wiu respond in fact the embers had not yet cooled when calls offering assistance had begun pouring in what the future holds is difficult to predict our concern is for the present and of one thing were sure aid wiu be forthcoming as it has in the past trail of tranquility this beautiful early morning scene was captured by staff photographer jira holt while oat for an early morning ski in the york forest region north of the seventh line the trail is well known to local horse riders and crosscountry skiers jim holt to our readers and advertisers an oldfashioned very merry christmas and a happy new year from the publisher and staff of the stouffviue tribune rear row left to right barre beacock advertising manager joan marshman rod spicer jim thomas editor centre row- doreen deacon aileen glover charles nolan publisher lois wideman front row jim irving and jim holt sports editor roaming around- a merrier christmas all round by jim thomas it is far better to give than to receive no group knows this better or practices it more than the health and welfare committee of the stouffviue lions club for the past three days chairman cliff aiken assisted by members doug brodie gord wyatt george fletcher paul roney and president ed mcaloney have been busy sorting packing and delivering toys to 23 boys and girls seven families in the area in addition the parents of these children wiu receive food vouchers ranging from 40 to 70 its a source of great satisfaction for us to picture the joy on these kiddies faces christmas morning lion cliff said saturday night the clubs participation in this mission of mercy has been simplified considerably through a project sponsored by family trust here in stouffviue branch manager john ross and staff invited folks to place gifts new and used under a lighted tree in their office on main street next to the town square the response was overwhelming far in ex cess of what had been expected the 3rd stouffviue brownie pack for example deuvered three sleighloads of items to santas headquarters and a kindly lady was so impressed by the program she purchased 35 worth of toys and presented them personally to mr ross and his helpers they famuy trust did a tremendous job said mr aiken its nice to know that during this busy time of year people can still think of folks other than themselves and how the response was enough to fill a halfton truck lion cliff admits that deliveries must be handled discreetly some parents are very proud he said further the names of recipients are known only to the committee even when letters of appreciation are written to the club the identities of those who answer are kept secret lion cliff stresses that its mainly for the children the kids today hear so much about santa they attend the parade the big buudup and yet for some it would be christmas without even a tree every mother every dad wants this but for a few its beyond their means these are the ones we endeavor to help the local druggist with a heart as big as a balloon remembers the year a stouffviue family was burned out in middecember although temporary accommodation was provided in a hurry christmas would have been anything but- merry this all changed when the lions club stepped in making it one of the merriest christ- mases they had ever known while some parents are hesitant to accept freewiu gifts they tend to swallow their pride for the sake of their children cliff said never once in his memory has a parcel been refused like everyone else at this time of year this fivemember lions committee plus the president have families of their own however they tend to set these personal interests aside for the sake of others most of whom they dont even know cliff describes them as a great bunch of guys yes veronica there is a santa claus thanks to the kindness of staff personnel at family trust and the health and welfare committee stouffviue lions club viewpoint- town councils whipping boy by jim irving the ink on their pledges is hardly dry but the new town fathers have wasted little time in donning their mantles of solemnity and posing like church deacons about to cancel the christmas concert they obviously know that theirs is a flexible mandate when for example when a couple ask for a building permit to add to their house to accommodate the new chud they can either grant it or give them a lecture in ab stinence the latter it seems provides the most satisfaction however in the case of don anderson of anderson haulage abstinence hardly makes the heart grow fonder anderson has been up before council more than the town clerk in the past year or so and the last planning board meeting council and planning board are one and the same was no exception anderson and his lawyer donald hind- son were back because youre not really fitted for the life of a politician until you pass the main test in it youre shown a picture of andersons trim and tidy truck depot and haulage operation on highway 47 then if youre able to purse your lips contract your brow fold your arms and stroke your chin thoughtfully all the time casting your eyes to the heavens and sorrowfully lamenting why should this curse be blighted upon us youre obviously in the right bin politics is your natural habitat a seat on the local council only a step or three away and the oath of allegedness all thats left to make it legal somehow or other the anderson plant is the natural whipping boy of all politicians aspiring or well ensconced to hear them talk it is an eyesore and an affront to the deucate senses of all stouffviue residents trucking operations apparently are to be both not seen and not heard those big trucks stir up dust you know the average family car doesnt of course or if it does its a more delicate kind not to be sneezed at as it were although anderson has been granted permission to combine his two operations under one readymix tower on main street there are still stipulations to meet as council seeks to have the whole thing all tightened up and as neatly packaged as a banana anyone driving into town for the first time or the second or the sixth for that matter would hardly notice the place set well back from the road surrounded by a chain link fence with trees and berms planted everywhere yet it is still not aesthetically pleasing to the local councillors who seem to think the road its located on is nathan philips square itself despite the proliferation of hamburger stands used car lots and a brokendown forest their model of perfection and the one theyd like all other industries to emulate is mcneil laboratories across the way from andersons this is their sistine chapel and one would almost expect to see leonardo paint brush and lunch bucket in hand en tering every day to add a few more blobs of genius to his masterpiece on the ceiling such is the reverence accorded it no doubt the councillors gain more solace from the psychotropic drugs and other major tranquillizers produced within than they do from the crushed gravel of the an derson enterprises after a long night around the council table that the former goes down easier is obvious only the constant nitpicking of council were anderson is concerned is hard to swallow but then the new counciuors must establish themselves and what better way to set their corporate zeal remember that any of you people wanting to run in the next election it beats thinking for yourself and guarantees you a seat everytime see rate increase stouffville the whitchurch- stouffville hydro commission is anticipating an average rate increase of 89 per cent beginning march 12 1981 however approval must first come from ontario hydro commission chairman ken laushway told the tribune the expected 89 per cent rate hike average includes residential commercial and industrial users final word on the rate application is expected in about three weeks mr laushway said
