that same indornitability of spirit and refusal to look uponberj affliction as anything more than part 1 of tbe awkwardness of 1- childhood is being displayed dairy by denise swedlo twoandahalf yearold daughter of brenda and earl swedlo of greenwood in fact it is probably being presumptuous to say that she even preceives anything like awk wardness in her movements as she shows a visitor bow her newly- fitted artificial right arm worksor passes a plate of cookies to him tbe plate cradled in her ail- but thumbless left band for earlier this summer denise lost her right arm just below tbe elbow and part of her left hand man accident on tbe farm attempts to sew the arm back on at hospital for sick children in toronto were un- successful and denise is now learning to live with us loss and s artificial replacement both she is doing with a rearing matter of fact- ness once apparently when an aunt asked her why she was taking so long in doing something denise replied well i only have one hand- she is just learning to manipulate her new arm which whe wears with the aid of a harness around her neck and shoulders and although it is sometimes painful and hot she would rather be with it than without she even protested one time that ber grand mother mrsdoreen middleton wouldnt let her wear it ber mother brenda said after mrs middleton bad decided u was best it shouldnt be attached at that par- ocular moment although denise is inclined to use ber left hand first and foremost mrs swedlo said they encourage ber to use ber new limb which she does if we ask ber its still not a natural part of her until that tune the new arm feels more a natural part of her denise is given constant reminders by her mother and grandmother and other members of tbe family tbe arm is to be used and is to be relied on with tbe same kind of positiveness as her natural one k- it is that practical attitude combined with their innate compassion that nodoubt helps make the transition all that less the nightmare it could so easily be for their pretty blueeyed blonde and sprightly charge from tbe time she was first carried in from the fields bleeding and still conscious to the time she was finally released from the hospital and settled back jiome demses mother andor grandmother have been by ber side and since that time they along with her father grand father and four uncles although tbe blackboard plays with ber doll bouse 7 to say nothing of passing out cookies to those around ber sbe even worked away auher mothers loom when it was left unattended for a few minutes one day shes always been independent said mrs swedlo sbe always wants to do it all herself- as if to back up ber mothers statement denise says let me do it as ber grandmother turns tbe handle on tbe doer of tbe kitchen stove however shes also been informed such areas are taboo wheres shes concerned and she doesnt insist denise swedlo is as bright as she is brave she even exudes a hap piness that as ber mother i 7 t- y- h says makes everyone else fed happy as weu- self pity is something sbe seems incapable of- two bears r 3 vjffei and one leaves ironically enough feeling that much better for having
