have seen the so- called controversial film taking chances which has been the subject of so many let ters news articles and editorials in our com- munity the film itself is one of the best educational aids for the stated purpose that we have seen or used in family life education it is factual realistic and tastefully presented in a fashion that readily communicates with its intended audience it does i not in any way encourage or promote sexual ac tivity or promiscuity as some have feared it recognizes that peer pressure has both positive as well as negative potential and demon strates how it can be constructively channelled for educative purposes the film presents t legitimate and clearcut moral questions and options in such a fashion as to enable young people to establish their own value systems it places a central focus on personal responsibility and the consequences of various choices it encourages young people to think and make decisions apart from spurofthemoment impulses the film clearly and repeatedly holds up the option of no sexual activity as good and acceptable as a part of an integrated program of family life education and as a resource for parents to enable them to instruct communicate and reinforce personal and religious moral values the film has considerable worth we must commend with high praise the manner in which the film was presented thursday evening mrs angela hamlen rn of the york public health unit very carefully and clearly told exactly what the film wasand was notintended to do she set the context and the careful restric tions in which it is used she explained the manner in which the film is presented to high school classes the film is only presented by professional staff and only with an appropriate introduction and thorough followup discussion and ex planation we are satisfied that there has been no exploitation of young people nor has the film been used without the safeguards that she outlined we note that a well qualified panel of consultants participated in the prepartion of this resource we are satisfied that the film does not contradict or conflict with the commonly accepted christian moral and ethical values particular emphasis needs to be made of the willingness of the health unit to make presen tations to parent and community groups and to answer any inquiries the public has this will enable parents to do more effective teaching of moral sexual information at home we recognize and support this fun damental responsibility of parents for moral training of youth we encourage and support the efforts of con scientious parents to do this and recommend this film as being a valuable resource to parents for this purpose in conclusion we commend the tribune for its editorial stand oh this issue and for providing such a generous forum for all concerned to express diverse viewpoints we support the efforts and position of trustee harry bowes in the york county board of education to make this valuable- educational tool a part of their program in our system we regret that the board has frozen the use of this film and urge them to reconsider this decision sincerely the rev philip poole the rev ted
