avenue has the formula shes the most vivacious senior citizen one could ever meet a parkview resident since 1974 she has nothing but kind nords for everyone employed there its a good place she says with a wonderful staff born ida foote oct 11 18ss shell celebrate ber 96th birthday this fall a keen memory coupled with a pleasant personality makes her a joy to be around ive a lot to be thankful for she says a native of betbesda she attended the little oneroom school there walking about a mile and a half there and back each day when the weather was really bad i always hated to stay home because i knew id miss a lot of fun isaac pike was the teacher a good many years the betbesda and stouffville telephone company actually had an office in the com munity but originally there were only about five homes accorded this luxury hers rev jim carder pastor at the stouffville united church for the past twelve years will conduct his farewell service sunday at 11 am rev carder came to stouffville in september 1968 from glenmount united church toronto hes highly regarded not only by his congregation but by the community jim thomas rev jim carder pastor says farewell by jim thomas stouffville its been a wonderful experience here i jove stouffville its a fine place in which to live few if any will disagree with rev jim carder minister for the past twelve years at stouffville united church all will agree that because of him the town is indeed a better place in which to live rev carder will preside- over his farewell service sunday often referred to as stouffvilles visiting pastor its been jims firm belief that you cant u preach to people you dont h know and you dont get to know people by merely shaking their hands on sunday mornings for this reason hes c made a practice of visiting nursing homes private homes and hospitals on a regular basis senior citizens appreciate knowing they havent been forgotten i consider this a ministers responsibility he says over the years hes been considered as much a part of the personnel at parkview as the regular staff often i suggested to joe nighswander he set me up with a room and a bed he joked a native of leemington rev carder has never lost touch with his old home town or his three brothers and three sisters annually they get together for a family reunion before entering the ministry he was principal of a one- room school with eight grades and sixtyfour students out of a salary of 550 he paid his board and saved enough to go on to university he attended at the university of western ontario lon don victoria college and emmanuel college university of toronto over a period of thirtyeight years hes had five pastoral charges including hearst 1942 barrie 1947 sudbury 1951 toronto 1956 and stouffville from 1968 he and wife genevieve will continue to live here mrs carder an ex tremely talented lady is involved in readership development with the united church of canada many of her informative articles have been published in the ob server weve been partners in every sense of the word says jim ap preciatively he speaks with pride of their family of four including three sons william of scarborough gordon and bob in markham one daughter ruth toronto and four grandchildren jim admits hes the kind of person who finds it difficult to slow down even on the advice of his doctor fourteen working hours a day are not un common when the phone rings you must respond he says on a number of occasions hes had as many as three funerals on a single weekend notto speakof other commitments hes tried to keep mondays free but even this hasnt always been possible despite the demands on his time he wouldnt have changed a thing never once have i regretted the decision its been a very fulfilling kind of work with many
