mildly supportive of this service at the same time weve been restrained in our criticism why because we were never quite sure of its aims and its accomplishments with the office here open only one day every tuesday a week and discussions being both personal and private in nature itstbeenrdifficult to assess the centres worth in recent weeks however we see a new image being projected a greater outreach into the community and this is good j tc i the administration it seems is no longer h content to simply place a welcome mat out- sideithedoor and wait for people to walk in no thevre going out where the people are where family life problems originate and where solutions are being sought too often we suggest by the time the troubled seek out assistance its far too late theres no turning things around once irreparable damage has been done on may 21 a seminar was held in the stouffville united church entitled stages of marriage on may 28 a workshop was organized in the presbyterian church under the heading communication in the family a motherchild dropin centre is available every tuesday also in the united church also realizing many parents concern over drug abuse in this area fullscale discussions at the grass roots level will be held in september here again the family life centre has taken the lead in addition theres a move afoot to get involved in the sex education field while the school board thrashes around not knowing what to do yes may was family unity month and yes the family life centre may have put on an extra push because of it we trust however this new image will last longer than 31 days family unity should last a lifetime unfortunately today its lifespans extremely limited sex education in schools rev ken campbells a dynamic speaker and what he says usually makes sense however on occasions he plays on the emotions of his audience to the point of what he says and they say makes no sense at all one such subject is sex education in j schools in this area we say his stand is not only archaic but dead wrong you have no business teaching children sex dr campbell was quoted as saying at a recent board of education meeting in the region of durham on whose shoulders then should fall this responsibility we ask the parents he would likely reply fair enough but lets be practical many parents dont many parents cant so what then wed like an answer to what rev campbell considers an acceptable alternative in our opinion sex education is just as important as academic instruction however most parents are no more qualified in one as they are in the other so why not turn both over to people who are the durham board we feel has taken a very sound and reasonable approachrrfirst the subject would not be compulsory although we think it should be second staff members can be exempted from teaching it and third the program was put forward because of pressure from parents in the first place we would hope that unlike some of the spineless trustees in york durham members will not put this course in limbo for another year but instead forge straight ahead its instruction thats long overdue the whitchurchstouffville museum opened its spring and summer program may 24 one of the program participants was spinner inger altaian of cedar valley other special events planned are a strawberry social june 28 and an antique car show aug 10 the museum is located on woodbine avenue in vandorf joann thompson 7hl tklslvc okay manage your old bank but lll never reveal the combination as i see it hello im jim irving at least thats the way the boss told me to start this thing well thats not exactly the way he wanted me to say hi however i noticed that the sponsoradog column in the classifieds starts out the same way in this case hi im trooper and im homeless i would make a caring family a good com panion etc and i want to come on quite that strong at the outset thought you should get to know me a bit first anyway i think the reason why the boss wanted me to spell my name out in the first sentence was to get the fact that there was yet another jim on the staff out of the way in a hurry he already has jim holt the sports editor and of course himself jim thomas the editor so when you want to phone in and blast one of the editors be sure to give his last name i have enough trouble with my creditors following me around and theyve had a few newspapers to follow me from first there was the moose ask for jimone will answer l by jim irving jaw timesherald i wont tell you when where i labored as a sports reporter then it was off to the calgary albertan a morning paper where you work nights sundays holidays afternoons and every other time that other people arent working and most of the time they are as well my final western daily was my hometown paper the regina leaderpost later on in the east i worked with the st catharines standard a fine daily of the niagara fruit belt and then the richmond hill liberal an equally fine weekly just a few concessions west of here in between ive done a bit of travelling a bit of freelance writing a bit of acting a bit of sleeping till noon and and and now im here and by the looks of the assignments editor thomas has given me it should be for a long time to come which suits me just fine i mean how many other newspapers ever ask you to do a story on yourself and on the very first day too now if that isnt an act of faith on the editors part what is so to justify that faith id better give this m one more run through before handing it in with all these jims in the story and in the office i could get them mixed up anyway just to repeat im jim irving so if you see me at one of your meetings walking down the street pushing my car up a hill or just standing on a corner somewhere reflecting as to whether the sun sinks in the east and rises in the west or whether it sinks in the west and rises etc i hope youll say hello t you shouldnt have any trouble with the name if im from the tribune office i cant be anybody else but jim window on wildlife can eat our fish by art briggs-jude- midst all the rumblings on acid rain and the pessimistic reports about the polluted conditions of our waterways its refreshing to discover there are still some local streams boasting clean water and while were not suggesting vou grab a tumbler and start sampling these area waterways there are signs that indicate at least some sections of these streams are better off than we believed in fact it will surprise more than a few people to know that almost all the small creeks that join up to form metropolitan torontos rivers contain trout the upper reaches and tributaries of the credit humber don and rouge rivers for example all support goodly numbers of these sparkling fish and though many are there as the results of restocking programmes by the ministry of natural resources just as many are native trout these striking beauties spawned in the chilled gravel beds of local woodland watercourses are by their very presence a sure sign that the water is clean for trout especially speckled trout are hardy only to the icy cold of their chosen stream and any lessening of such water quality reacts in a lethal way on their delicate makeup several weeks ago along with other members of the outdoor writers of canada we toured some of these mentioned creeks at kortright on the upper humber we were shown methods of stream improvement by the metro conservation authority that will ensure good trout habitat for the future when we multiply these efforts in all the streams lacing the watershed of the oak ridges morain we begin to see what an impact the conservation authority has on the future of fishing in these areas for most of the waterways from glen major east of stouff ville right across the top of metro to the albian hills northwest of bolton are straddled with conservation areas many of the neigh borhood creeks that join these authority waters therefore reap the benefits of restocking and stream management to no small degree a few years past when we ran a small live bait outlet at gormley fishermen would often pass on information about their trout fishing escapades at that time it seemed i was always too busy keeping other sportsmen supplied to follow up many of these leads tales of catching brookies under some of the culverts in richmond hill or taking trout right in the middle of markham made me a little envious to say the least so this season i was determined to explore the contents of some of these local waters last saturday having the permission of the owner we danced our bait in one of these local streams there at the base of a bubbling falls my wife caught a beautiful 14 inch speckled trout and i followed with a pair in the 12 inch class oh yes there are some real nice fish in our local streams and unlike too many other places these finny battlers are nice to catch nice to see and nice to eat editors mail who cares mr editor did we elect a town council in 1978 or sandbox overseers at the chicken little nursery school sometimes i wonder with so many pressing problems that should be occupying members time theyre fussing and fuming over trivial matters that count for nothing as far as taxpayers are concerned as an outsider id say some of our politicians are too caught up in personalities to be effective legislators talking to them on an individual basis this is very evident real kids stuff aubrey wheelan r r 3 stouffville plain people ruth sheppard rr 2 stouffville ruth sheppards second home is the
