lacking basic skills ihey should have mastered in highschool t standardized testing of grade 10 and 12 students hopes to change that gordon- wells testing officer for the york county board of education explained this process at orchard park- public school- this assessment was introduced in the early 1970s involving grade four and seven students it wasnt until last sept that it was expanded into the high schools i the areas testedare mathematics and reading the tests are spread out over a two and three year period to see how the students are progressing- once the teacher has the results he can -focus- on problem areas and plan programs around these needs this- can also have reverse effects if some people scored ex- ceptionally well courses can be designed for these bright students mri wells explained that many factors can affect a students per- formance on a test teachers must interpret the results another purpose of this method is to compare results of york county with the rest of ontario however mr wells stressed that this is not the major function v we dont want teachers or- trustees to simply compare our schools progress with other areas if there are problems action should be taken- to remedy the situation he saidj k t i j v t v r
