pianists bring honor to markham markham the town of markham has just reason to be proud of its excellent pianists five of these are paul and ernest chan elmlea street aon jaanus carolwood crescent and john and donald chu cachet parkway rjt 2 3ormely all are entered in the 37th annual kiwanis music festival that concludes feb 16 in toronto paul and ernest chan ages ten and nine respectively first took lessons from janice lin of don mills and now from hh lam of scarborough they are at the grade 8 level and practice one hour each day in previous competitions paul scored a second and a third in 1979 he placed first at the cne they are students at reesor park public school their parents look on piano playing as a form of recreation far better than being glued to a television set they say neither boy has yet decided if hell make music a career both have plenty of time to make up their minds john and donald chu are students at upper canada college john has been studying piano for ten years and donald for six their teacher is kim ang of don mills the kiwanis festival is nothing new last year they placed first in the class for duets the boys musical ability goes far beyond the piano john plays clarinet in the schools concert orchestra while donald plays trumpet in a jazz band they also are accomplished organists and violinists in the future john wants to major in some field of weeks born in campbellford cliff moved to the claremont area in clifford reynolds 1923 the couple has lived in their present home at the corner of victoria and wellington streets since 1945 and because he knows almost everyone in the village never a day goes by that friends dont drop in he particularly enjoys visits with dr nelson tomlinson with whom he played golf a few years ago long gone and is a member of st andrews united church choir in addition shes sung in several school musicals in 1979 she placed second in the festivals silver tray competition shes also a talented pianist performing at the grade 9 conservatory level other activities include head of the winter carnival committee at mdhs a ballet student ten years and a member of the markham figure skating club for eight
