jim and lynne boyd of stouffvule were en route home when the crash occurred hit broadside by another vehicle that failed to stop how could this happen the weather was clear the pavement was dry and the corner while poorly illuminated was properly signed be this as it may people immediately begin searching for reasons such a tragedy could occur and this is understandable however one should never lose sight of the fact that human error could be and often is the direct cause in this case investigators may never know for the driver of the second car is also dead but one thing we do know blameless or not far too many young people from this area have died in motor vehicle collisions during the last ten to fifteen years on the basis of population our record must be one of the worst in ontario why is this so two stouffvule families are undoubtedly asking this exact same question why for a son a daughter two happily married people there would seem to be no answer only that their time had come ad mittedly little solace for those who must bear so great a loss election cost not an issue theres been considerable handwringing among many conservative mps over the fact this country is faced with its second federal election within a period of v months sinclair stevens of yorkpeel places the dual tab at something like 116 million in cluding 63 million last may and 53 million z this february mr stevens and others have made their point it is an expense that no one wanted for an election that wasnt needed but thats no longer an issue its all water under the bridge what the electorate wants to know is what lies ahead and sine stevens for one is in an enviable position to provide the answers for apart from any mistakes made by his party his personal record is one that should survive any challenge this being the case mr stevens should take to the offensive in a manner that will pile up points for himself his ndp and liberal opponents can hardly be held accountable for something that was not of their doing noticeable by their absence v a civic reception was accorded the management and players plus guests of the haninge sweden and stouffvule midget hockey teams saturday night it was a gala event worth every cent of the 1000 budget allocated by councu however to the wonderment of au some councilors chose not to attend this boycott if thats what is was proved an em- plain people ernie beaven lloyd avenue stouffville this week the tribune starts a new feature that can best be described as people they are the folks in town who although they may never hold positions of importance either socially or politically remain a vital part of community life this week we up our hat to a gentleman who fits this role perfectly ernie beaven 51 lloyd avenue stouffvule is the friendly attendant at wilsons esso station ninth line and main its his genial how are you that brightens many a dull morning for the local commuter travelling to toronto ernie joined the wilson staff just over seven years ago and has been there ever since he and wife evelyn are the proud parents of one son john in torcnto two daughters mary lauterbach rr 3 stouffvule and susan winn goodwood and six grandchudren before coming to stouffvule they uved on 19th avenue markham west of the 7th concession and before that in wuiowdale their loss has been stonffvules gain for ernie beaven is the kind of man that helps make a com munity barrassment to the town and to our team if the absenteeism was intentional they owe the electorate an apology if it was unavoidable then its time they got their priorities straight when guests decline a dinner engagement theres usually a reason but when the hosts fau to show its indefensible i was editor for a week by joanne thompson if you reauy want to find out why you admire someone step into his shoes for a week i did just that as the substitute editor of the tribune and i soon found out that the shoes worn by jim thomas are hard to fill the week was a hecticbne because new years feu on a tuesday there were earlier deadlines putting added pressure on sports editor jim holt and myself instead of the usual six days or is it seven we had to put out an 18page paper in four but i eagerly accepted the challenge even though i fully realized it would mean several late late nights and early eariy mornings the first thing on the agenda was gather the news something of an ordeal in itself with town councillors and board of education trustees enjoying extended vacations there were appointments to make and keep pictures to take and stories to write after au this came pages to put together headlines and photo cut hnes to compose and pictures to crop and size the newspaper isnt pieced together here in stouffvule nothing as simple as that this work is done at newmarket with everything signed sealed and delivered by courier to meet hopefully prearranged deadlines there it is pasted up and taken to the inland plant at mississauga considering my lack of experience everything went together quite smoothly that is until the eleventh hour at newmarket that was when the production foreman began breathing down my neck and checking his watch finish it or else he threatened sixty minutes is all youve got page 17 was fuu of holes with late copy stiu being set jim holt was assigned to both the sports and front pages as well as pages in between he was making lastminute changes and corrections relax i said to myslef weu do it and we did but not without problems looking over the finished product thursday i discovered errors that could have been corrected if only there had been more time its tough working against the clock however meeting deadlines is the name of the game in this business and we had already exceeded ours by thirty minutes i breathed a sigh of relief as the final flats were whisked out the door and on their way yes being an editor for a week is a learning experience something ill never forget its one thing to dip your toe in the water and quite another to take the plunge news item councillor bill kamds claims town is being bylawed to death atvheejler j the xrioone whatever you call that game count me out roaming around hindsight has 2020 vision by jim thomas cs whenever i have an hour to spare i take to thumbing through the files of old tribunes its an intriguing pastime almost an ad venture revealing events of bygone days like no other source many of the happenings are amusing at least they appear amusing now however any tendency on my part to laugh is quickly stifled whenrl realize that folks down the road could weu be laughing at us and this very fact raises an interesting question how wiu residents of the 2040s regard we natives of the 1970s and 80s how will our town today compare with the community sixty years hence i dont know and neither do you but we au can guess the best way to arrive at some kind of conclusion is to usten in on the con servation between two oldtimers standing at the corner of church street and main the date is jan 10 2040 first old timer no sir kids today dont have the fun we did remember how we used to go skating down at the old arena on a sunday afternoon fifty cents i think it was thought we were in heaven yes we did especiauy if we had a douar to spare for some chips and a hotdog second old timer remember indeed i do and every january the town would flood a couple of rinks one at the west end and another at the east wedchoose up sides for some great games of shinny turned out some mighty fine hockey players too like eddy harper who went au the way to the washington capitals first oldtimer yup ill never forget eddy that was uie year washington defeated colorado rockies for the stanley cup he was great scored the winning goal in the finals second oldtimer then the council went and spoiled it au they hired a recreation director and au the volunteers up and quit didnt blame em a bit id have quit too first oldtimer yea but that didnt stop them they went ahead and buut that new fandangled sports complex that cost close to three million were still paying for it and will be long after you and i are dead and gone aint half used anyway the kids are so pooped from playing soccer au summer they need the winter to rest up second oldtimer you know as well as i that it was all those folks from the city that forced it on us but we reauy did need something ever since the old ice plant blew up we had to do without lucky nobody was hurt first oldtimer remember how we used to fish off the old dam north of doc petries caught some pretty big ones too that was before they buut all those homes up there second oldtimer never should have done that polluted the stream and killed au the fish first oldtimer some tried to blame it on the 500 acre landfill site south of ballan- trae sure made for some uvely election talk second oldtimer sure did that was when the councu used to meet in that old theatre building south of the clock tower boy if mayor king could see the beautiful budding weve got now hed turn over in his grave first oldtimer sure would but things are a lot busier now more people and more problems i can recau the council spending a whole night talking about some giriie show at a restaurant in bauantrae they tried to stop it and did for awhile until some smart lawyer took their bylaw to court and shot it full of holes cost the town a pile of money and they stiu lost second oldtimer i never could un derstand why all the fuss from what i heard that was nothing compared to whats seen today even on television first oldtimer i just barely recau the night the rink burned down but i remember the fire department they were a great bunch of guys all volunteers not fulltime like now when the siren would go theyd come roarin down main street a mileaminute no one ever got kuied but there were a few close calls second oldtimer that was when the firehall was next to the bowung auey before they built the present one at bloomington first oldtimer thats right mayor becky wedley promised the folks at bauantrae and musselmans lake better protection and they got it too thats why every home in stouffvule has its own sprinkler system second oldtimer speaking of the old town clock too bad they had to puu it down the tower deteriorated so badly it would have cost a fortune to fix it it was a real landmark first oldtimer sure was but for au that the main street still looks better with shade trees planters flowers and benches really nice the chamber of commerce started it au but i bet they never thought it would look like this second oldumer they were concerned about the saturday traffic too that was when the sale bam was going full tilt on hwy 47 before it was moved to goodwood first oldtimer some say they wish all f i tf that traffic was back but it wul never be not with those other eastwest roads to the north and south second oldtimer and to think all our policing was done from an office in newmarket i guess folks were more orderly then one or two cruisers was au youd see here except in an emergency whod ever thought theyd buud a new headquarters at ringwood w first oldtimer good spot though right across the road from a mcdonalds if you cant find an officer one place hes sure to be i at the other second oldtimer i stiu miss seeing au those big cars around doc john drove a buick ernie abraham had a lincoln and s denny alsop owned a corvette beautiful they were first oldtimer i know but that was before gas went to four dollars a gauon and j half the folks started riding bicycles second oldtimer and house prices why i remember when i bought mine fifty- five thousand it cost now theyre four times that i dont know how some folks do it both i work i guess s first oldtimer theyhave to and why not no kids to keep the mrs at home besides a thousand dollars a week is better v than five hundred a jjf second oldtimer i just cant- believe whats happened at the stouffvule couegiate how its grown when i was there the attendance was under a thousand with sixty teachers now there are two high schools three thousand kids and two hundred teachers first oldtimer but none of them walk jog maybe but they wont walk most ride the whitchurch stouffviue transit its faster because the school bus stops at every door second oldtimer the older ones arent any better they dont even walk to the post office anymore their maus delivered right to their step no wonder they jog theyd be big as balloons if they didnt first oldtimer did you see the com muter train this morning i counted three diesels and twenty passenger cars all pretty weu loaded too i just barely remember when that all started the old station not the one thats there now but the one they tore down was packed with people when the first train pulled in they even had the claremont band there ken laushway he was the reeve then he organized it au second oldtimer i dont remember that but i stiu have the pictures my mother t cut out of the tribune must have been quite an affair t editors mail untidy main street dear editor it is with some hesitancy that i pen this letter for your readers may say its none of her business be that as it may im making it my business and i wish it taken as constructive criticism my husband and i stopped off in stouffviue sunday for dinner at a restaurant on your main street it was our second ume in your town the first being last july also on a sunday we couldnt help but notice the un tidiness putting it mildly of your sidewalks parts of newspapers pop botues coffee cups and refuse everywhere it was the same last summer stouffvules a lovely town but your housekeeping leaves much to be desired mildred templeton avenue road toronto first oldtimer my mother saved that paper too lets see who was the editor back then jim thomson or something like that he used to have a big clumsylooking camera that must have weighed a ton he often worked weird hours two and three oclock in the morning sometimes they say he would fau asleep right in the middle of writing a story i guess he must have got home once in awhile had six kids anyway all grown up now i guess second oldtimer i recau hearing a name similar to that i wonder what happened to him anyway first oldtimer oh he took a heart at tack and died one sunday morning running from the presbyterian church to the 4 firehau second oldtimer too bad that reminds me ive got to get down to the tribune office and pay my subscription twentyfive dollars now you know thirty the beginning of next month see you tomorrow
