owner ernie lee of ballantrae was advised to lop off her head and prepare her for the oven however ernie would have no part of that he had a steel pin inserted in the limb and now shes good as new gert is only one of several birds and animals ernie has befriended jim holt goose called gert injured pete find a friend ballantrae a dog is mans best friend however for animallover ernie lee of ballantrae appreciation of pets doesnt begin and end with a dog hes been lending a helping hand to dogs cats birds you name it ever since he came to the community six years ago and it would seem that mother nature has her way of spreading the word for the walking wounded some on four legs and some on two keep coming to his door seeking assistance at the present time ernie has three patients in his care each making a good recovery one of these is a six year old goose he calls gertrude or gertie for short gertie had the misfortune to waddle in front of a horse and suffered a broken leg for many a goose such an injury would have resulted in a oneway trip to the chopping block but ernie wanted no part of that he transported her to the stouff- ville veterinary clinic where a steel pin was inserted v the surgery was successful and gertrude was soon mobile but her con valescence required more than just getting back on her feet she had to learn to swim something that came natural before iso ernie and son cliff spent three hours a day for an entire month pushing her back and forth across a 40 gallon horse trough prior to the operation ernie was advised as to cost it would be expensive the veterinarians said they wondered if he might rather have her put down ernie said no way and hes glad he did for gertrudes as right as rain with only a slight limp to remind her of the accident the bill was something like two hundred dollars all the attention she received created a breakin the family circle her brothers and sisters were miffed and flatly refused to let her join them in formation flights it was sad ernie said the others soaring aloft while gertie was left all on her own while snubbed up above gertrude is queen of her court on the ground she waddles over from the barn and pecks at the back door to be let in the affection she shows for her master is touching when ernie feeds her pieces of bread she snuggles up to him and caresses his cheek ernie says gertrude will limp as long as she lives but apart from this shell lead a perfectly normal life january white i bath towels from 18 colors available nobility allure versailles rose lustre 20 off all fabric shower curtains
