judicial system last summer i lost a classmate and friend who sincerely exemplified the 4 best qualities of bur society a few days ago her murderer was found not guilty by reason of insanity it seems that legal insanity can be applied anytime a person loses control of his emotions and does harm to others in that case there are probably several thousands of people in durham who should be put away of course most killings occur in the heat of emotion and the laws purpose is to restrain that potential hostility in every individual this cannot be achieved by such leniency and sympathy towards criminals punitive justice must be used and used unsparingly all the nonsense about crime being a product of society is a copout used by philosophicallyminded morons who fail to realize our society also produces many more decent in dividuals as well as violent criminals a t human being must be responsible for his mental attitude and the actions that occur because of it parents play the most important role in the forming of ones mental attitude and parents are responsible to a degree in some cases definitely not all crimes are caused by poor parenthood strong authority is y necessary to engrave respect and self- discipline it appears that more and more parents are neglectful of setting solid morals and enforcing them such incompetence in that most vital role in humanity should not be tolerated there may be many factors leading to a crime like murder but the one who commits the crime has the ultimate control over its execution and in most cases should be held responsible y d how can psychiatric tests taken weeks afteca crime possibly reveal an accuseds state of mind at the time of the crime im sure that anyone who has committed and is charged with a serious crime would become unsettled mentally to say tholeast how could anything but this recent mental imbalance be revealed in psychiatric tests there are so many technicalities which may be abused it appears with increasing frequency that man- made laws are not providing justice in his foolish infatuation with trivial technicalities man has been able to drive a wedge between his laws and the justice they were meant to ensure only by setting examples with firm punitive actions in our judicial system can the problem of increasing crime be alleviated or ended i hope i speak for many when i appeal to all those involved in our courts and legislatures to serve justice with the morals behind the laws in mind rather than the literal loopholes and the technicalities which disease our judicial system of course none of this wouldprobably repair any damage or harm done by a v cer tainly it doesnt bring back a lost friend but it would probably prevent another similar oc currence young hlee village interiors 147 main
