claremont area tronbadour the tribune thursday october 2s 1s 5 thirty year old nigel russell of rr 2 claremont strikes up a pleasant tune on his fiddle as he strolls along stouffvilles main street towards home the practice he says is common in ireland and scotland as well as parts of europe jim thomas by jim thomas stouffville- sweet music filled the air as a 30 year old troubadour strolled east along main street stroking out familiar tunes on bis violin cars slowed and people stared but nigel russell of rr 2 claremont paid no heed why should i be asked- whats wrong with singing and playing outdoors thats where musical instruments sound best the handsome deeplytanned young man says hes not the least bit embarrassed by peoples quizzical looks he claims its a very common thing in countries like scotland ireland and parts of europe drivers dont screech to a halt when they hear a bird sing do they so how much different is it when a man sings while he enjoys playing the violin or fiddle most the banjo is really nigels specialty and hes pretty good on the guitar too its a shame he said that some folks go from the cradle to the grave without ever hearing a live musician or seeing a live concert while adults tend to glance sideways as nigel goes walking by such is not the case with children he observes kids are open to it he said if i happen to pass by a schoolyard im immediately surrounded by boys and girls they dont ask why i do it but how he explained nigel says he cant understand why people tend to hide themselves away when they practice its like a form of punishment he said editors mail dear jim wildlife riot food art briggsjude the writer of window on wildlife made a statement in his oct 11 column that angered me he said and i quote too often the public has been led through movies and television into believing all deer are bambis all ducks are donalds and all bears are gentle bens the cold hard facts show these creatures are made up of the same kind of flesh and bone as chickens cattle and swine and to me that spells food what bunk chickens that are eaten are raised for that purpose so also are most cattle and swine but the stupid human has no hand in the raising of deer wild ducks and bears they are natures gift to man to be admired and protected and i dont mean protected by killing them off strange isnt it how man will conjur up all kinds of excuses for slaughtering wildlife under the guise of con- servation without thinking how wildlife got along before he ever arrived on this continent its only when the numbers of certain species are reduced to near extermination that a hunting ban is imposed its too bad provincial officials and people like mr briggsjude cant see the forest for the trees kenneth ramer stouffer street stouffvuie is killing en dear mr thomas im a great lover of nature and because of my feelings towards all living things be it a simple field mouse or a huge indian elephant i always read the window on wildlife column by art briggs- jude the writer i feel is extremely knowledgeable on his subject in fact he knows more about nature than ill ever learn one thing disturbs 4ne though and its ad mitted very boldly in the column of oct 11 under the heading no mur derer on the one hand mr briggsjude talks in almost sacred language about birds and animals even spiders and then on the other he makes no apologies for his love of killing the very species of wildlife he wants to protect and under the guise of food no mess i have long questioned his ethics in this regard but the current admission is an insult how any true nature- lover can enjoy slaughtering a tiny cottontail or a deer is beyong my un derstanding to me its repulsive who needs the art ibriggsjude is to provide a balance to nature nature was looking after its own long before he was bora s reg weir rr 3 stouffvuie free your childs portrait admission made me sick dear jim 9 you wouldnt kill a mouse so you said in your most recent column i appreciate this my feelings are much the -tame- r how then i ask can you allow a wildlife columnist to take up space in your valued paper who admits without shame that be njoys killing birds and nlml who would do hta or anyone else no hannt5 his admission under the beading no mur- derer made me sick art briggsjude may try and support bis argument with facts but to me hes a hypocrite of
