m late del jennings fire chief in village stouffville stouffville has lost one of its native residents a man who during his nearly 85 years was involved in many areas of community life del jennings was born on clarke street in stouffville the son of jacob and maryann jennings his service with the bethesda and stouffville telephone company spanned 43 years retiring in 1960 when toe firm was bought out by bell del jennings is one of the last links with stouffvilles past some may still recall how he and his brother tom would erect and light a huge christmas tree in front of the former fireball beside the clock tower when village electrician nels byer took a day off del i assumed that respon- sibility also during world war i he served overseas with the 127th battalion seeing active service in belgium and france an older brother fred was killed in that conflict he was a charter and- life member of the stouffville legion with ah affiliation with the stouffville veterans club before the legion was formed he along with bert lickorish and dr neil smith were legion trustees for years and active participants in the building of the present legion hall only once did del jennings miss a remembrance day parade and that was due to a stay in hospital a legion service at the oneill funeral chapel thursday 1 evening was largely attended a late charles hodgson a farmer all his life a l t 0 n a following an illness of about one year charles hodgson a lifelong area resident was laid to rest following service oct 2 in the oneill funeral chapel stouffville rev small of the memorial christian church was in charge with interment stouffville cemetery charlie as he was known to a wide circle of friends was born just east of stouffville in uxbridge twp the son of james leslie and matilda hodgson while still in his teen years his parents moved to altona where he continued to carry on the farm there mr hodgson enjoyed the company of neighbors and liked getting together vith these folks on a regular basis at elsons garage the group will not seem the same since hes gone he was an enthusiastic hockey fan both of teams here in stouffville and the toronto maple leafs he seldom missed a saturday night game on tv despite a lengthy illness he maintained a hope that some day hed be well again he took treatments regularly at scarborough centenary hospital mr hodgson passed away at home sept 29 besides his wife the former albena lotton he- is survived by one daughter jean mrs ernie smith of gorm- ley a son harold loretta crescent south stouffville and four grandchildren charlene hermiz and blair smith christine and patti hodgson pall bearers were murray stewart millard reesor joe nighswan- der mansell elson frank budge and ernie carruthers honorary pall fire department 35 years and village fire chief 21 years he was succeeded by the late bill malloy he was a trustee at the stouffville united church and a faithful member of the congregation a member of the stouffville lawn bowling club the silver jubilee club and the friendship club he maintained an active interest in all aspects of town life and in recent weeks had been a keen observer of the re- channelization project he was a skilled craftsman with many pieces of furniture in local homes indicating his handiwork on aug 30 mr and mrs jennings celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary mr jennings suf fered only a brief illness he was admitted to hospital sept 30 and passed away oct 3 he is survived by his wife the former vira buckler two daughters aurelia mrs walter smith stouffville and margaret mrs deb cooper newmarket two sons ken of cold- water and lloyd in stouffville six grand children and two great grandchildren rev jim carder conducted the public funeral
