town library new art gallery dream come true 1 the librarys latcham gallery is undergoing a metamorphis next month it will shed its amateur chrysalis and burgeon into a newly- fledged showcase for professional artists the event on a local scale will be as momentous as the argos win ning the grey cup or the government balancing the budget well maybe thats a bit heavy on hyperbole but the point were making is that the emergence of the new galery is a special happening thats important to the library and to the- cultural growth of our comm unity if youre old and bold enough to cast your mind back to the days when libraries were as sedentary as defensive chessmen youll realize that many exciting and even inovative moves have been made since then for our library the major move was one of location when we took oc cupancy of a suberb new building during stouffvilles centennial since then the facilitys latcham gallery has become increasingly important to the librarys image and impact for its primary function has been to display and promote local artistic endeavour this concept will be heightened rather than changed when the gallery makes a second debut next month its focus will be on professionals to achieve this an arts committee under the directorship of ron baird a noted canadian artist and sculptor who resides near goodwood has been formed its aim is to sponsor and develop the art program promote local artists and ultimately begin a permanent art collection for the community with the first two aims firmly in mind the newly- fledged gallery will flap its wings in spectacular style on sept 12 with an opening display of works by fourteen nationally- known professional artists who reside within or near whit church stouffville this is the first in a series of 3week exhibitions already scheduled for the upcoming months so if you wish advance notice through the gallery mailing list or would like to comment on the art program please dont hestitate to contact the library we hope no lets say were confident that the responsive folk in our com munity will not only encourage the gallery fledgling in its efforts to get off the ground but will help and watch it
