twin sisters share top awards ballantrae when youre a twin in the same grade at the same 4 school sharings the name of the game 3 so it was june 27 when ballantrae public school held its 1979 graduation ceremony mary and margie griffiths rr 3 stouffville shared the spotlight of attention- together in fact the two received so many awards they literally wore a path to the plat form the fourteen year olds were recognized in the following categories- art physical education audio visual volleyball basketball softball english french social sciences and general academic excellence margie received a coveted school letter while mary was presented with the academic proficiency prize mary also received a mathematics tab and two athletic trophies one as a school champion and the other for interschool margie was selected to introduce the evenings guest speaker mr terry gray former principal at whitchurch highlands school and now on the york county boards administrative staff both mary practice dummies were used with a com puter readout indicating whether the students had mastered the routine cost of the program was paid for by the stouffville lions club participants in the project athletic award at ballantrae public schools graduation night program making the presentation is staff teacher brian cockburn jim holt o choir applauded stouffville it was an evening to honor the academic and athletic accomplishments of individual students at orchard park public school june 25 however the most appreciative applause was reserved wnot for reading writing and arithmetic awards but for the schools senior choir directed by staff teacher ron robbins they sang beautifully selections that thrilled the audience in the stouffville united church a few weeks earlier as a fitting conclusion principal jm hincks presented the group with an engraved shield the prize won last spring at the lionssponsored music festival in newmarket other highlights of the evening were response r from interviews held at the sockhop at sum- mityiew public school june 15 indicate a strong hope the- dances will continue next fall i jne of the dance organizers darlene brown said that when the idea of the sock hop originated they were leary about it but she v now admits its gone over super the kids have been great the sockhops first proposed by the county breakers cb club is a nonprofit organization who turn all therevenue from the 150 admission charge back into future dances the only real expenses are for dance instructors and the disc jockey the kids were all extremely enthusiastic about the event and all appeared to be having good clean fun steve altilia 12 412 loretta crescent said he enjoyed the dances so much that he wished they would run through the summer steve added that he thinks they should lower the cost of ad mission by reducing the number of prizes shawn duncalfe 11 of 105 church street n felt the dance instructors were a waste of time 0 and the of windsor drive said she was in between in her appraisal of the dance not saying it was great but hoping that it would continue lots of the kids at the dance held lauras attitude stating that the sockhops give them something to do twelveyearold david white 72 thicketwood boulevard summed up the event as excellent and said he hoped they would con tinue next fall twist contest winner karl -luefonr-recently- moved to scarborough said it wasnt a bad dance but suggested possible improvements on the technical aspects karl thought the dances could be upgraded by improved lighting and a
