tub tribune 1hursdav apro js 1s 5 1 last week time was turned back for 57 grade 6 students from orchard park public school in stouffville they spent five days at black creek pioneer village and attended the centuryold schoolhouse there they also toured the many buildings on the site here cathy carr charles street left and paige cowan ninth line south sit atop a cedar rail fence with a log- constructed broom shop in the rear jim thomas editors mail y a learning experience dear jim the 1979 grade six class at orchard park school has just had the very unique experience of being students for one week at dicksons hill school in black creek pioneer vijlage in the year 1871 this highlight in their school life will be remembered by each one of them for many years orchard park has excellent rapport 1 with black creek so were offered a can celled booking to mr macdonald mrs brownand mrs wideman who agreed to say yes ibanks from a parent the grade six students raised money for this project through a penny carnival held at noon after school and in the evening of one day and constantly supervised by their- teachers- last tuesday morning a busload of grade six students became pioneer pupils and what a week the week included having perfect weather in a unique setting using slates and chalk learning lots of memory work singing god save the queen every morning sitting at double desks using roman numerals participating in a spelling bee making cookies dipping candles sketching around the village and riding in a horsedrawn carriage to men tion a few the important factor in this whole week was the dedication and con tinuing high level of quality maintained by the teachers mrs brown mrs wideman and mr macdonald how fortunate the grade six students ire to have had this learning experience sincerely r loyanna sanders 29 obrien ave stouffville record moneyspenders dear sir since the election was called i have been swamped with norman caf ik campaign literature all printed and mailed at taxpayers expense the latest the caflk record leaves me entirely mystified what is the purpose behind this record is mr cafik suggesting that because f he was our mp the riding got more than its fair share of goodies are we to believe that govern ment money is spent not according to need but by politicians anxious to buy our vote does not the government of canada treat all canadians in a just and equitable way the conclusions are very disturbing did every liberal mp boast such generosity if so quebec- must be overwhelmed with skating rinks youth centres and sewage plants it isall very nice but the best opportunity for youth in my humble opinion is to be able to find a job mr caflk claims he got another 70 million for expropriated owners in the airport site how does not the ex propriation act passed by the liberal government provide for just set tlement of claims and an appeal to the courts is 9 mr cafik above the laws of the country would the expropriated people have been cheated by the courts without mr cafiks intervention did the government pay 140 per cent more for the land than was reasonable mr cafiks claim is preposterous if it is true then his whole govern ment stands condemned if untrue he is mis- leading us i agree that liberals thave been big spenders my familys share of the 118000 million dollar debt 6lbffl800k day camp owed by the people of canada is approximately 17000 i would feel happier if these nice works were paid for in cash when mr caflk first took office federal ex penditures were 11300 million dollars now they are 52600 million dollars my taxes are now wasted on interest payments totalling 8400 million dollars a year twenty five per cent of 1979 spending is to be financed by borrowing this weakens the value of my money causes inflation and forces me into a higher tax bracket please mr cafik convince me that you know how to manage the economy i already un derstand your ability to waste my money yours truly m rodgers claremont rr2 deserve equal status dear editor im writisg in response to the- anonymous girl who contacted yourpaper two weeks ago on the subject of married womcs in the teaching profession im sure this young lady feels just as frustrated as thousands of other young people who have worked hard to obtain a particur job only to be disappointed however i feel it rather immature of her to suggest anyone relinquish his or her position because of marital status if this young lady is as dedicated to becoming a teacher as she claims instead of crying to herself shell get out and do something about it a young cousin of mine who graduated two years ago from the faculty had worked extremely hard to gain a reputation as a good and reliable supply teacher she willingly goes anywhere and to any grade to fill in and con sequently she is now working an average of four days out of five if this doesnt appeal to the young lady she could consider teaching in other countries for a period of time its interesting to note that a local teacher recently retired did not have difficulty finding a position in another part of the world cuso- welcomes young people and it could be one of the most valuable ex- periences of her life it should be pointed out that it is the married teacher who is often at a disad- vantage in the above two suggestions as she is restricted in her mobility because of a husband and perhaps children i rather wonder if this young ladys attitude has a place in the classroom- women jiave worked for years for equal status young students are only beginning to understand and accept the fact that the female belongs and can compete in any area she wishes and that by being married and having a family it does not disqualify her from any roles she feels will meet her need this is the attitude i want represented in the classroom by the teacher not the idea that a married woman must step aside for others lb mumford mothers day gift from markham jrdmsjons9
