the tribune february o w 15 a letter to the editor from 3 organizations kids sports prime concern to the editor there appears to be a concerted effort within the community to discredit and question the validity of the organizations which currently use the stouffville arena a specific group seems to be promoting a con frontation which would see tbem take prime time hours from the boys and girls currently engaged in hockey and figure skating the group in question the mens amateur hockey association has elected to go its own route to get these hours bypassing the recreation com mittee and dealing directly with the town council they made their pitch and obviously impressed the town fathers who now cant understand why this league should not have some of the already non existent hours several questions to asks clarification dear jim your article regarding recreation needs some clarification i am not in favour of establishing a recreation board at this time i am in favour of studying the whole subject of culture and recreation for all of whitchurchstouffville it is important that we do this soon so we will be prepared for the in crease in population from the oulverton subdivision approximately 2000 people and we will have an idea as to which requests for expenditures should be allowed we are currently spending 45703200 on culture and recreation in this community this is and should be a major part of the budget a study into culture and recreation would suggest alternatives to us and help us to go in the right direction also it should be noted that wintario will not support any more capital expenditures until we have such a study although they will pay 50 per cent of the costs of a study definitely such a study would praise very highly the many involved people that currently run our recreation programs any future plan would certainly have to maintain this high level of involvement and let everyone know that they are giving of their time and energy in a coor dinated effort yours sincerely jim sanders councillor ward 6 which answers elude us are why had the mens amateur hockey association never ap proached the minor hockey association the girls hockey association or the figure skating club to negotiate for some of their time why do these organizations along with other recreational groups have to deal with the recreation committee while the mens amateur hockey association who because they claim to be self supporting deal directly with the town council this year the girls hockey association had to buy practice time at an outside arena the minor hockey association has problems providing enough time for house league and all star practices the skating club uses early morning hours in order to fit all of their skating requirements into each week lack of ice time is not something new to stouffville and its not going to get any better several ears ago a committee was formed with members from the three main users of the arena chaired by a member of the recreation committee to promote and organize the development of a new arena this committee has never had 5 meeting if we wait another two years we may not hare to worry because with rising costs of labour and material recreation budget cuts and in creased ice rates most people wont be able to afford to participate the three main organizations minor hockey girls hockey and the figure skating club have over the past several years achieved a very high level of cooperation amongst themselves this cooperation has led to several joint fund raising programs which were very successful im sure if the mens amateur hockey association were to approach these groups it would be a starting point for future cooperative efforts lets not forget that all of these people are volunteers who give freely of their time and it appears their efforts and motives are being in correctly interpreted they do the best with what they have a suggestion by councillor sanders that a recreation department is needed is completely out of line a recreation department would add unnecessary expense to the town as a whole and would detract from the voluntary services of all sports and recreational organizations recreation is for boys and girls at the lowest possible cost recreation for adults is an individual elective and usually the cost is not the prime consideration please dont lose sight of what we are trying to provide at the town arena it is recreation for boys and girls while creating a spirit of competition sportsmanship and developing future citizens if we lose sight of this then we may as well close the arenas ball diamonds tennis courts and pay a much higher price in a future misspent society whitchurch stouffville minor hockey association whitchurch stouffville girls hockey association whitchurch stouffville figure skating dub editors mail recommend the lash dear editor we are hearing more and more these days about muggings going on in toronto tills is not all that far away and our city is expanding doser and closer to us its been suggested by certain members of parliament that the lash be brought back to deal with certain crimes these muggings are a perfect example for which the lash should be used a treatment on these hooligans who prey on older folk would certainly be a deterrent and well deserved few persons would be back for a second application enough of these sobsisters this is the most effective way of stopping this outrage let s put it into effect before conditions set worse j c archibald stouffville rr 2 fjptser lirf camp
