tainly received their monies worth when the stouffville fitness and boxing club held a boxing tournament featuring several of the boxing dubs from in and around toronto one of the hardest fought bouts of the evening came late in the card when scott ecclas of the peterborough club met spence arnfield of the clairlea boxing club ecclas who is strictly a boxer in every sense of the word had a tough time winning a decision over arnfield who is of the knockem down dragem out school of fighting the two contrasting styles were interesting to watch and although ecclas took two counts of eight and was dumped outside the ring on two occasions he kept his head and continued to fight coolly and with precision scoring time and time again with a series of good punches arnfield due to his continual rushing tactics ran out of steam after the second round making it easier for ecclas to take the decision on points stouffville boxers did well carl luefong knocked out dave mc- cormick of macdonalds public opinion swimming is not just a summer sport at least not if you are brian mercer of stouffville already wellknown in local circles as a dedicated swimmer brian practices at the markham aquatic club 6 days a week from 4 to 6 hours a day under the watchful eye of texan george smith his first award came when he won the haliburton lake marathon which in- cidently he has won every year since brian also holds ten of his clubs records from 50 to 1500 metres when asked about his thoughts when on one of his marathon swims brian replied sometimes i think of a very- hot shower especially when the water is very cold or maybe i- sing to mysdf there are times of course when he feels all alone out there and very vulnerable it is at times like these that the imagination starts to work overtime so fear is also the companion of the long distance swimmer brian feels that it is vital to be prepared both physically and mentally when training for any kind of event especially the long distance ones his preference of- course does happen to lie in that direction this he says gives me the most satisfaction during our con versation the subject kept reverting to lake ontario and the hazards involved on this question brian feels that regardless of how prepared one is there is an element of luck in which one can pick up the right current and be lucky in steering clear of cold water areas to date he has managed to swim a distance of 10 miles non stop and is building up the distance as he progresses at present he is also trying to put on another 20 lbs so as to combat cold water- swimming his first introduction came when he wrote to cindy nichols who en couraged him in every way during his early days it would seem that his enthusiasm and dedication are boundless y and of course this is what makes a true athlete although still at- tending grade 12 at sdss brian is not yet quite sure as to how be wishes to proceed in the academic field- however at i the back of his mind is the thought of perhaps a degree in business ad ministration it is a fact of life that- when one is dedicated to sport then therei very little time for girl friends or socializing however brian has u consolation that the members of bis dub are a very closely knit group and they are all very good friends
