deck out the house and tree with decorations its nice to reminisce with someone whose memories preclude such things as shopping packaging and worrying if uncle dave will like his gift that someone is viola malcolm of stouffville she recently granted the tribune an interview on christmas as it was prior to world war i coming from a family of three brothers and two sisters she reflects there was not a lot of money available in those days she fondly remembers christmas eve when all the children would hang their stockings in anticipation of finding an orange some hankies nuts and if lucky a pair of thick socks knitted by mum ex travagant presents were unheard of in their family as the children were not allowed downstairs undressed father was very strict on this a favorite trick was to jump into bed fully clothed so as to be able to sneak down later and take a peek the most popular poultry back then was goose stuffed with sage onions and celery accompanied by roast potatoes com peas and rich brown gravy mrs malcolm recalls when the oven door was opened the smell was just heavenly dessert was christmas pudding of course covered in rich white sauce followed by mince pie at the malcolm farm there were no alcoholic drinks at christmas due simply to the fact no one drank hard liquor after dinner everyone would sit around eating fruit and cracking nuts father would play christmas carols on the har monica while everyone joined in the singing even on christmas day everyone had to be up at 6 am there were many chores to be done prior to the start of festivities milking feeding the horses and water had to be carried in sometimes when tem peratures were low the well would freeze up and then ice had to be lifted from the rainbarrel into a large tub there were no visitors in those days as the distances to be covered were too great and the weather was usually bad being in the choir at locust hill methodist church would mean attending practise every saturday three or four weeks before christmas everyone well almost everyone attended christmas service boxing day was treated like any normal working day on the farm and there was no such thing as sleeping off the festivities mrs malcolms views on todays society were pungent and to the point children are very spoiled but i dont think i would like them to experience my childhood which although holding many pleasant memories was very hard in deed death removes devoted mother by evelyn milsted gormley sympathy of the com munity is expressed to mr aylmer gray and family in the passing of miriam a devotedwife and mother mrs gray
