page 1 news in the tribune 34 years ago a check back through the files of december 1944 revealed the following stories neighbors came to the assistance of roy seebeck and rescued sixteen head of cattle after a heavy weight of snow collapsed a straw shed on top of the animals only one cow died the seebeck farm was located on the pickering townline near the 7th concession those who helped included hugh michell brace leh man clark jerman wally crossland bert jones arnold hutchings lawrence gray carman fllgg and thos postill it took five hours to free the livestock on two successive nights foxes raided a flock of geese on the farm of albert drudge killing and injuring seventeen the geese had been spending the nights in a small stream that cuts through the drudge farm on the 10th concession of markham four stouffville area boys gene paisley ronnie conner gordon lewis and allan wells joined markhams oj1a juniors for preseason practices for the 8th year in a row the brodie sheep captured first prize for the best car lot of south down lambs at the chicago international exhibition william brodie also came home with a grand cham pionship the animals sold for 23 cents a pound of 26 feet at the howard ratcliff place known as the island he found the spot and correctly estimated the depth at 30 feet twentyone cattle and a team of horses were saved from a barn fire on the property of walter baker 9th concession of pickering the herd bull died in the inferno mr baker was aided in the release of the animals by his wife and two daughters audrey and ilene it was the second barn blaze on the farm the first time the property was owned by levi grove the death was reported of frank sangster at the age of 81 the deceased had requested that his body be cremated and the ashes be scattered to the four winds of heaven over russian soil war con ditions prevented the immediate carrying out of that undertaking protesting the teaching of christian religion in the public schools of ontario and against the action of the stouffville board of education for agreeing to place the subject on the curriculum of the local school rev duncan macgregor of the stouffville baptist church filed the following letter with the board i wish to register my protest placing on the curriculum of the public school the subject of religion i do so for a number of reasons the chief of which are that first these are public schools and second it is not the duty of the state to teach religion while i am most sincerely convinced that the christian religion is the only true religion i am opposed to the teaching of even this religion in our public schools public school is just that not a protestant school nor yet necessarily a christian school toymaker stouffville paul simpson a toymaker
