replied staff writer val sears then with tongue in cheek he proceeded to list the reasons why reasons so meaningless yet so often repeated we regurgitate every time theyre retold the negative side of the feature while meantto be funny wasnt why because it was typical canadian and canadians are chronic complainers our dollars only worth 85 cents american so its going to cost more to hibernate in sarasota too bad so spend the winter in stouffville you might enjoy it so beefs expensive at 179 a pound tough buy wieners at eightynine cents gas prices are high and going higher so drive a honda theres a heavy tax on liquor beer and cigarettes so quit drinking and smoking a price hike is predicted for hydro so turn off the lights the list of selfimposed restrictions could be endless but thats not for canadians wed rather complain about what we havent than be thankful for what we have 1 have a good time dear hey mom im home p open house at fire station this is fire protection week across ontario in whitchurchstouffville while special occasions shouldnt be necessary to stress the importance of preventing fires it would seem to be the only way of focussing attention on this ever- present hazard the fire department here is strictly volunteer this places greater responsibility on each man he must respond quickly whether he be at home at work in the middle of the day or the middle of the night most of us dont appreciate this service not until we require it but thats not time to get acquainted the time is tonight thursday evening at the fire station on main street its open house from 730 to 9 pm drop in see a film share a coffee and talk to the men see firsthand what makes this volunteer system one of the most efficient in the province roaming around oh to be young again at age 93 by jim thomas fuel tankshomes a bad mix oil companies utilizing aboveground storage tanks should not be permitted to expand their facilities on edward street in stouffville rather they should be en couraged to bury them or better still have them removed to a less hazardous location an application by one firm for permission to replace a 5000 gallon tank with one of 15000 gallon capacity has been rejected by town planning board and rightly so admittedly refusal of expansion will not solve the problem not immediately however if the present site is too small which may well be the case the firm may be forced to relocate on a larger property this is what the municipality wants fuel storage and living quarters be they homes or apartments are a bad mix so the sooner the situations remedied the better change proves difficult you look tired this morning commented a jobs comforter following church service sunday i look the way i feel i answered honestly closing my eyes for a moment of blessed relief while i could have explained the reason for my fatigue i was sure no one was in terested so i kept quiet still interested or not legitimate or not you the readers have a right to know its its markham fair yes despite the fact almost jvo weeks have passed im still poopeeff walked myself intdthegroundtltbe lucky to have recovered by christmas however despite my condition i ask you not to inundate this office with getwell cards thats not what i need but rather a steeltoed size 10 implanted firmly and squarely on the seat of my pants that quicker than anything would lift me out of the doldrums council capers- i concluded this saturday following a visit to parkview home there i met norah macklem a resident in and around stouffville all her life shes going on 94 and yes believe it or not attended markham fair she was the oldest recorded visitor on the grounds i wanted to see what it looked like she said and her impression great she said it was great norah macklem recalled how as a young girl she and her parents crawford and hannah macklem would strike off down the 6thcoricession of whitchurch twp to attend the fair at the old hwy 7 site the midway was quite small she remembered and most of the exhibits were displayed in a building called the palace with farm chores to do in the evening they always left for home around four this year however transportation to the grounds was not a concern and there were no chickens to feed or cows to milk on her return a van took them right to the gate where they were admitted free of charge norah visited two of the three main buildings enjoying most the exhibits of baking sewing vegetables and flowers i read the names on all the tags she said the first prize apple pie caught her eye also the 166 pound squash while norah doesnt pretend to hide her age she had no idea someone was going to write it down at first i dont think they believed me she said il they do now last week she was presented with a silver pin and a beautiful bouquet of flowers a green senior citizens ribbon hangs proudly in her room was she tired not at all she said and she sure didnt look it not last saturday yet i was pooped sunday and looked it too oh to be young again 93 years young f i in a number of municipalities across canada police are switching to smaller cars the reason is simple theyre more economical and police rarely indulge in those wild high speed chases that require big powerful automobiles blacks women and members of some minorities are slowly beginning to appear among the ranks of progressionals and in executive positions in india rats still destroy as much grain as humans consume what have these three examples to do with each other simply this the first two are changes taking place in north america most people welcome them as common sense and justice a few still regard them as dangerous deviations from tradition however this is here in canada and the united states where we have become ac customed to change where change has taken place faster and more often than perhaps anywhere else on earth in contrast life in much of india southeast asia and africa continues with few differences from centuries ago today many wellmeaning people on this continent grow disillusioned with aid to un derdeveloped nations they argue theres no point in helping them with food or technology until they make radical changes if we who are familiar with change find jt difficult to accept minor changes in our lives how can we so glibly demand radical change from people who appear to us to have never learned how to change j services we demand cost money we taxpayers today are like greedy children always demanding the government repair our broken toys or give us more candy that candy just happens to be very expensive turning to government like a lost waif turns to a close friend we ask the government to solve the pollution problem protect life and property feed and clothe us yet if government were to take action against pollution for example by making garbage disposal more efficient and the process required citizens to separate refuse into bags for vegetable matter glass paper and plastic the howl that would be heard across the country the government would be accused of infringing on ancestral freedoms well we just cant have our candy and eat it too we call for help from the government and then we have to be hit over the head with a law to accept the aid weve requested now i understand why the romans inscribed their laws on stone tablets to beat roman citizens into sensibility of course all this candy we ask for cost money if you want a new road it has to be paid for we havent found a magic geni that will grant us our every wish not yet at least then people turn around and complain about the rising tide of socialism the bureaucratization of government and higher taxes if we insist on asking the government to solve all our problems these are reper cussions that are bound to occur people just dont seem to realize the money for these projects has to come from seomewhere whether theyre paid for out of by ed schroeter your pocket or invisibly through taxation its all our money the residents of windsor drive were patted on the back recently by whitchurch- stouffville planning board for their initiative until these people took action themselves windsor drive was an unlighted dark and lonely street their solution was to rent a light from ontario hydro and pay the electricity bill there was no running to council begging for assistance as others might have done there were no choruses demanding that it was their right to have a light on their street certainly its not a right but people assume it is a streetlight like any other service provided by the municipality is a service that must be paid for the increasing tax rate and the rising tide of socialism which everyone complains about will be difficult to halt particularly when no one is interested in giving up the iuxeries which contribute to this phenomena theyre hidden expenses but expenses just the same poets corner mix business with pleasure a birds eye view of new markham fair site this is how the new markham fair grounds looked on saturday sept 30 from about 1000 feet up tribune editor jim thomas when aloft in a helicopter and shot this picture through the glass bubble on the front seat passenger sfde in case youre confused thats 18th avenue on the right and the stan watson farm buildings in the distance the oval shaped ring centre is the race track with the midway buildings and display booths on the left we have a club in stouffviue- its called the silver jubilee which all our senior citizens should come down town to see the members of the executive are all the very tops they keep things running smoothly better than a bunch of cops we play euchre pool and bowling even a little bridge in our kitchen you can make a cup of tea and peek into our fridge the ladies quit and knit and paint and make things for a bazaar they seem to have a lot of fun no matter who they are we have our own kitchen band it didnt cost a lot of money some people say the musics grand others think its funny our leader at the piano will play most anything with a bell upon a washtub that only has one string so if you are downtown shopping and get some aching backs come into our club and set a spell its a great place to relax so all you senior citizens who havent much to do just drop into our club some day- someone will welcome you by robert rawson
