the tribune thursday october s iks 7 our churches i new year in the fall by rev ted creek st james presbyterian church it has often occurred to me that a proper date for observing new years would be the first of september rather than the first of january for the beginning of the fall season for many marks the new beginning a new year children are back to school much to the delight of parents who have had to answer the questions of what are we going to do today all summer for many students last month marked the start of a completely new experience the child going off to kindergarten the teenager starting high school the young adult beginning college or university for others september brought a new job or change in location of their work for still others the fall season means getting settled into the new community into which they moved during the summer meeting new friends and neighbors to anyone facing a new beginning i wish happy new year when i think of new beginnings i am reminded of such biblical people as abram the old testament patriarch to abram god gave a new name abraham and a challenge for abraham was to pull up stakes in his homeland and journey many long miles to a new home where god would lead him abraham must have weighed the risks and dangers in his mind as he contemplated gods direction but yet he did go and through him the roots of the israelite nation were established in palestine perhaps that is a rather dramatic example of new beginnings but we do feel much anxiety and risk when we face the challenge of a new start of going forth into totally new circumstances the day our youngest child goes to school a new job beginning a new life as a married couple a new and more responsible position or when we bid farewell to the last child leaving home no matter what the cir cumstances god promises his presence just as he did for abraham of old i trust that you will embrace the risks and challenges of a new year and go forth under the guidance of gods holy spirit a brief word in conclusion september also marked the beginning of full church activities in stouffville we welcome one new clergyman rev donald payne late harry crisp a tribute the recent
