editor recently this week i came up against an un- bendable government rule which made me sick my husband has been on strike since the beginning of july he receives 3000 per week strike pay we have a two year old and another baby due by christmas im having a very complicated pregnancy and under doctors orders to stay off my feet and rest otherwise i would be out tramping the streets for a job we havent been able to pay rent hydro or any other bills since the strike ma bell has threatened to remove our phone unless our bills are kept up to date and paid in full each month since we live in the sticks of stouffville and being under medical care we cant get along without this luxury hydro has been a little mere un derstanding although i dont think it can go on for too much longer this 5000 per week enables us to buy enough bread macaroni hot dogs and enough milk for the baby for a week plus gas for the car for my husband to do strike duty and look around for a temporary job without success we cant afford vitamin pills for my pregnancy nor have we been able to turn the neat on in the house during this cold weather we simply cant afford the hydro or oil to do this last week the warmest temperature in the bouse was 51 degrees it was pretty cold and drafty finally swallowing my pride i called the welfare office in oshawa for assistance they were very polite about the whole thing but informed us they couldnt give us a penny due to a rule they have about labor disputes pretty choked up i asked if this meant the government would stand to see our hydro turned off and freeze and starve to death or worse evicted from our home because we couldnt pay rent they were sym pathetic but the answer still remained the same i was under the impression the government would assist a family in need no matter vvhat the cir cumstances obviously i was wrong the lady at welfare told me off the record the only way they could help in my situation vas if my husband left me then theyd take care of my son and i imagine now theyre breaking up families to assist you i called the member of partliament for whitchurchstouffville but he didnt return my call if my husband could get another job hed be there hes not the type to sit around however the minute a company knows youre on strike they refuse to give you a second look the thing is even if my husband was called back to work to morrow we couldnt afford to pay our back rent and bills in a million years so i sit here at 2 am writing this because i cant sleep i should ha ve cried myself to sleep hours ago but im too angry im angry at myself for ever believing that government takes care of people in need im also angry that poeople who make up the government would allow these socalled rules to exist mrs karen hussev rr 3
