wht wrthum thursday april 27 1s78 education week in claremont interesting guests at school claremont education is more than teachers standing at the yront of a class in structing students maintains stan todd the principal of claremont public school he feels that sometimes it may be more enlightening to break away from the regular school pattern accordingly he and his teachers planned a varied and unorthodox program to- commemorate education week theme of the week was speak to me of yourself and many of the people in the com- munity did just that they came to the school to talk to the children about their work their hobbies and their experiences ambng the schools guests were a sculptor a doctor a wrecking derby driver a weaver an rcmp officer sans horse a cake decorator with cake a veterinarian an oldtime blacksmith and many more in addition to meeting people from all walks of life the children also baked bread made soap held a talent night and explored different cultures to top it all off one of the students brought his horse to school and gave pointers on what to look for when buying your own mount the children responded to the program with great enthusiasm and principal todd said the only problem with the week would be re establishing the routine its going to be tough going back he remarked regretfully and then added there may not have been much teaching but there was a lot of learning eoing on this week constable brian oconnell left had to field a lot of questions during his classroom visits kids wanted to know everything from whats the two big lumps in your students claremont students linda jones laura vale redshaw and steven hall and sharyn barkery demonstrate part of the hustle that both the students and teachers participate in each day all star softball the whitchurch- stouffville all star girls softball practices will take place over the next week and all teams are open to anyone interested in trying out complete rundown of teams and times of practice are as follows novice girls aged 12 and under as of jan l 1978 will practice tonight thursday april 27 at 6 pm coach is al piette bantam girls aged 14 and under as of jan 1 1978 practice on monday may 1 at 630 pm coach bob morley midget girls aged 16 and under jan 1 1978 practice this saturday april 29 at 10 am coaches are lloyd kerswill and garry hess juvenile girls are those 18 years of age and under as of jan- 1st 1978 and will practice on sunday april 30 at 1 pm coach is paul kealey intermediate ladies open practice monday may 1 at 630 pm and the coach is wayne morris intermediate ladies slow pitch open four teams and home games on tuesdays coach bob stevens- v in boys all star teams its the squirt boys aged 10 and under practice this saturday april 29 at 1 pm coach is bob wilkinson peewee boys 12 and under will also practice this saturday april 29 the time at 3 pm the peewees will be coached by dave mulholland bantam boys aged 14 and under as of jan 1 1978 will be practicing saturday april 29 at 3 pm dave mulholland coach there is a drastic shortage of peewee and bantams players so the organized decided to combine the two teams into one practice juvenile boys 18 and under practice on sunday april 30 at 3 pm with pete san derson coaching each division still needs players shef fields get firsts saints drop souses viiriif i v jussfc i the stouffville legion team was this years peewee consolation champion in the house league the team is from left to right on the front row dave prescott duncan sanderson giles elliott bill blundell randy lyon doug rexgraham kenny randy dunford jeff terson dave britton scott innes cornelius back row left to right mccurdy jimmy lyon todd pat- and jim lyon coach absent was cathy karen and steven sheffield each came away with another set of victories at their latest judo endeavours the wins came at last weeks new york state championships which attracted competitors from across the united states and ontario cathy placed first in the under 124 lbs class while karen took top spot in the under 134 class the third sheffield steven made a clean sweep of the two divisions he entered he first won in the lightweight class and after that decided to try his luck in the senior under 132 division he won that also this saturday both steven and karen will be competing in the first annual scarborough championships for brown and under belt com petitions the stouffville souses plans for yet another oxbridge mens basketball championship went down the drain last week as they lost an exciting overtime game to the st- johns saints the semifinal game saw the saints come up with their biggest per formance of the season as they sqeaked by the souses 4544 pistol jim flet cher sank two crucial foul shots with just five seconds to go in regulation play to send the game into overtime in the extra period dandy don beauchamp popped in a shot but the saints came back quickly to tie the game up again with the souses playing for the last shot they un fortunately drew a foul with four seconds to go st johns made one of two and after the ensuing timeout a final souses shot bounched off the rim and out thereby giving the saints their win pistol was the top souses shooter with 14 points jim hill and don beauchamp each added eight while eric button had six randy barber with four and dave connell and gary fockler with two each rounded out the scoring after the game daves only comment was i guess old age caught up to all of us at the same time the souses would like to thank their loyal fands for the vocal support they gave
